Recycle, benefit a local church, get a tax deduction

May 21, 2010
Nancy Whalen, New Street UMC

Many residents of this unique town are unaware of all the "good" that our churchesdo every day. As former secretary of the Shepherdstown Ministerial Association, I know about the multiple ways these churches help our community; so I appeal to all readers to pitch in and do their share.

New Street United Methodist Church is one of many historic buildings in town, and maintenance alone is costly.A recent rash of "must-do" repairs means more fundraising, sowe are having a Spring Fling withyard sale, baked goods and homemade lunch this Saturday and Sunday, May 29 30. We need you! All proceeds will help our church fulfill its mission: "Open hearts. Open minds. Open doors."

Not only do we welcome everyone to our 10 a.m. Sunday services and other events, but we support our community in various ways: sponsoring Boy Scout Troop 33; giving space to groups like Friends in Action and Alcoholics Anonymous. We play a major role in Vacation Bible School every summer; and we support Community Ministries' food pantry.

We want to be an outreach church. If you are spring cleaning and have items you don't want, consider donating them to our yard sale. No clothing please.

We offer tax-donation letters for all contributions; and, if you have things that aren't too large, we will even pick them up at your convenience. All items must be at the church by Friday, May 28. Donating unwanted items to New Street UMC is an excellent way to "recycle," giving them a second chance in someone else's home. Please call Nancy at (304) 676-9014 or the church office at (304) 876-2362 for more information.

Take advantage of our "three-for-one": Recycle. Help us support our community. And get a tax-deduction. Come to the Spring Fling to shop or have lunch, and remember that it's a good way for those on fixed incomes to purchase things they need. You can also buy someone else's stuff - things that may end up in our landfills. All unsold items will be donated to those in need. We thank you.
