Workshop will bring river history to light

April 1, 2011
Shepherdstown Chronicle

The Historic Shepherdstown Commission is offering a workshop this weekend on one of the area's great natural features - the Potomac River.

The event, entitled "The Potomac River and Its Impact on Jefferson County History," will be broken up into morning and afternoon sessions.

Historians and naturalists will address the river's effect on the area economically, historically, geographically and culturally.

With Shepherdstown being butted right up against the Potomac River and with a partnership formed around the revitalization of the said riverfront, The Shepherdstown Chronicle urges community members to attend the workshop.

The workshop, which is funded through a grant from the West Virginia Humanities Council, is free to those that attend - an incentive to learn more about this integral part of the community.

Shepherdstown's past - the Mecklenburg tobacco warehouse and various residences - and its present - the Bavarian Inn, Shepherd University and, still, locals' homes - sit along the Potomac River.
