SAIL provides community update

By Staff | Aug 3, 2012

Linda O’Brien, who has been the volunteer coordinator, has contracted with Shepherdstown Area Independent Living to provide coverage of the office for approximately 20 hours per week, primarily on weekday mornings. She will continue to coordinate member requests and train volunteers; provide administrative services and interface with and provide support to committee chairs. To ensure ease of communication with members, O’Brien will be posting events on the web site calendar at www.shepherdstownSAIL and handling mailings, both by email and by USPS.

Members should call O’Brien to obtain names of vendors such as plumbers, house sitters, in-home hair and nail care; respite care for a companion for a spouse; transportation to the airport; and a myriad of other services. Chances are there is at least one such provider in SAIL’s data base. She will make a follow up call to ask if the vendor provided the promised service under the agreed-upon terms.

Remember to email or call in recommendations for vendors who have provided adequate services, especially for lawn and tree care and for small repairs.

The Board of Directors voted recently to adopt a new schedule of membership dues. As of each member’s anniversary date, the rate for a single person will be just $250 per year and for a household of two or more, the rate is $500 per year. This fee schedule is now in effect for new members. This could only happen because of the generosity of SAIL members and other donors who believe in the “village” concept. Subscription and careful stewardship of funds has enabled SAIL to get up and running and to operate below budget expectations. The hope is that by adjusting the rates SAIL will be able to broaden the base and make SAIL more useful to more people.

SAIL has provided many rides to members during the past several months, offered a program on home safety and is planning a fall social for all members and volunteers. A social for business and professional members of the community was held to encourage community and corporate partnerships with SAIL.

A new round of small-group meetings has been scheduled for September. SAIL members are encouraged to provide names of potential members. This has been one of the best recruiting tools.
