DAR sets date for Montpelier trip

August 13, 2012
Shepherdstown Chronicle

Pack Horse Ford Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution offer a trip to the home of James and Dolley Madison on Saturday, Sept. 15. A charter bus will depart at 7 a.m. to historic Montpelier, built circa 1820, in Orange, Va.

The mansion is freshly renovated and restored after a $25 million investment. In addition to a guided tour of the mansion, attendees will receive a special presentation, "Constitutional Conversation," only a few days from the official Constitution Day, Sept, 17. Attendees will also see a special exhibit, "A Young Nation Stands: James Madison and the War of 1812," which explores the causes and key events of the war.

After lunch, there will be time to leisurely explore the grounds of Montpelier with self-guided tours of two kitchens, cellar spaces, Mr. Madison's Temple, South Yard slave quarters, archaeological digs, Madison Cemetery, Slave Cemetery, Visitor Center and the museum shop. Another option is to relax and view the beautiful landscape in the heart of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

Boarding of the bus will begin at 6:45 a.m. at the Shepherdstown Fire Hall back parking lot. The bus will leave promptly at 7 a.m. and will return to Shepherdstown about 6:30 p.m. Bring snacks and drinks. Remember, this is a walking tour.

Enjoy a fun-filled day with family and friends for only $80 per person, which includes the charter bus, all admittance fees and tours, boxed lunch and gratuities. For more information and to obtain a reservation form, contact Cheryl Brown at 304-876-3817 or frankk5600@aol.com. Seating is limited and paid reservations should be received by Aug. 31.

Trips like these and other charitable work help the DAR to "Preserve the Past, Enhance the Present, and Invest in the Future." To learn more about the work of today's DAR, visit www.DAR.org.
