Shepherd University head men's basketball coach Justin Namolik announced today that Eric Gabriel has been named assistant men's basketball coach. Gabriel replaces Casey Weitzel, who resigned to accept a similar position with Azuza Pacific.
Gabriel comes to Shepherd after serving as an assistant at Mount Olive College for the past three seasons. He helped lead the Trojans to a 60-27 record over that period and a regular season and tournament conference championship in 2009-10.
Gabriel also served as an assistant at Methodist University.
Prior to coaching a Methodist, Gabriel spent two years as a head coach at Fort Loramie (OH) High School and also served as an assistant at Alexander (OH) High School.
Gabriel was a four-year member of the men's basketball team at West Liberty University and served as a team captain as a senior.
Gabriel gained his bachelor's degree in elementary education from West Liberty in 2004 and added a master's degree in recreation and sport sciences with an emphasis in coaching education from Ohio University in 2011.
