Schedule announced for remembrance walk

On Sunday, Sept. 15, the Antietam Remembrance Walk from Sharpsburg, Md. to Shepherdstown will take place to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Antietam. The three mile walk will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Sharpsburg and move along the approximate route taken by thousands of wounded men on their way to receive whatever help they could find. This walk is in honor of the fallen that fought and died at Antietam, but just as important, it is also a tribute to the citizens of Sharpsburg and Shepherdstown who cared for the wounded, buried the dead and found a way to get back to the business of living. Civil War e-enactors, in Sharpsburg for the re-enactment of the battle, will be participating in the Antietam Remembrance Walk. The event is open to all. There are two parking areas in Shepherdstown the first in Lot A – Shepherd University campus at the corner of Princess and High Streets. The second overflow lot is at St. Agnes Church on Rt. 480 and Washington St. There is also parking in Sharpsburg at the Sharpsburg Elementary School on MD Rt. 34. (Shepherdstown parking is preferable.)

A free bus service will begin at 4 p.m from Shepherdstown to the Sharpsburg Train Station and continue every 20 minutes. Volunteers will be on duty to direct at parking areas. Buses will return folks to Sharpsburg until 9 p.m. The walk begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Train Station.

Steve Recker, author of “Rare Images of Antietam,” and Smithburg resident Miss Clara Barton, portrayed by Susan Rosenvold, superintendent and historian, Clara Barton’s Missing Soldiers Office, Satellite Museum of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. The Shepherdstown 250 choir will preview the upcoming Sept. 23 concert. There will be a special screening of Shepherdstown resident Jim Surkamp’s “Shepherdstown’s Wounded Thousands — Sept., 1862” and “Antietam: Decisions Sorely Missed –Sept., 1862”

Producers of the events are Peggy McKowen, associate producer of the Contemporary American Theater Festival, Shepherdstown 250 ARW planning committee, Sharpsburg Heritage Festival committee.

Shepherd University Dining Services will offer a hot dog/hamburger dinner in front of the Dining Hall on North King St. Cost for the a la carte dinner will be $6 or less.
