Memorial service set for Sept. 15

By Staff | Sep 8, 2012

Shepherdstown Chapter 128, United Daughters of the Confederacy is holding a Memorial Service on Sept. 15 at Elmwood Cemetery. The service is to be held in honor fo the 150th anniversary of the Battles of Antietam/Sharpsburg and Shepherdstown.

The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. with Nicholas Redding serving as speaker.

The Confederate plot in Elmwood is one of the three cemeteries in which Confederates that fell or died of their wounds at Antietam were buried. The other two are Rose Hill in Hagerstown and Mount Olivet in Frederick.

Not all of the 164 soldiers in the confederate plot of Elmwood are from the Battles of Sharpsburg and Shepherdstown. It is known that there are soldiers from 10 states buried in the plot. Twenty-two of the buried are from Georgia, whose soldiers covered the Confederate retreat through Shepherdstown.
