SHEPHERDSTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Library Board is seeking suggestions about future uses to be made of our present building at German and King Streets.For information about a committee which will study safety along Route 480 at Lowe Drive, which may become the entrance driveway to the new library, please call the Library at (304) 876-2783.

Need ideas for Halloween costumes or parties? Books for all ages will be on display all month in the Children’s Department. Ages 6 through 12 are invited to hear scary stories and create spooky crafts Thursdays at 4 p.m. all October.

Teen Read Week is Oct. 14 – 20. Check out our newest graphic novels, bestsellers, vampire fiction, steampunk and science fiction titles.

The last day for children to submit a completed summer reading log and receive a packet of prizes is Oct. 15. (The gift certificate for Four Seasons Books and the coupon for bowling at the University’s Student Center expire on Oct. 31.)

The FOSL Book Group will meet in the Library at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26.

There will be a Halloween costume parade for all of the children attending Library story times, plus homeschoolers and friends on Tuesday, Oct. 30. Meet outside the Library at 10:30 a.m., or if it is raining, meet inside the chapel of Trinity Episcopal Church at Church and German streets.

Children attending the Threes, Fours, and Fives program are invited to wear their Halloween costumes to our morning and afternoon groups on Oct. 31.

Come to the Clarion Fitness Center in Shepherdstown for SALGA YO, a new class with Jeanne Fisher which incorporates the gentle stretching of yoga before and after 30 minutes of Salsa and other Latin-based dance cardio will be held at the Clarion Fitness Center on Wednesdays at 9:10 a.m. Call for more information at 304-870-7011.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. The museum tells the history of Shepherdstown and of the Entler Hotel, in which it is located. The 6th annual Tastes and Sounds of the Town will take place from 6-10 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown. The Eastern Panhandle Free Clinic is producing this event for the first time in hopes to raise money for the only free clinic in the eastern panhandle of West Virginia, which continues to grow exponentially. Tickets can be purchased for $50 and donations can be made via the website www.tastesandsounds.org.

This year, over fifteen regional restaurants from all over the area will provide a tasting of their wonderful cuisines. Many restaurants located in Shepherdstown will be involved in this event, including Bistro 112, Blue Moon Caf, Hypnocoffe, Mellow Moods, and the Shepherd University Dining Services. In addition to the excellent cuisines that will be offered at the event, local entertainment will also perform, including the O’Hurley’s General Store String Band and duo Dr. Adrienne Zavala and Hector Zavala. Finally, the auction will consist of great prices, like West Virginia University football tickets, vacation getaways, and gym memberships.

A free film screening: “Waking the Green Tiger,” will take place at 6 p.m. at Opera House LIVE

ACFF (American Conservation Film Festival), Shepherdstown Opera House, and Sustainable Shepherdstown are partnering to celebrate ACFF’s 10th year. This month we offer a sneak preview of one of the many fine films shown during this outstanding festival taking place Nov. 1-4. Tickets to the fest will be available for purchase at this screening.

Oct. 12-13

Notorious concert and workshops: Lauded as “sparkling” and “exhilarating,” Notorious musicians Eden MacAdam-Somer and Larry Unger present a thrilling musical experience in genres that span many continent. The concert takes place on Friday at 8 p.m. at Reynolds Hall. Admission is $18 adults, $15 seniors, $12 SMD members, $8 students, Free to Shepherd students with Rambler ID. The duo will be teaching workshops for musicians in playing for dances and other situations, a sort of dance musician’s bootcamp. Oct. 13

Middleway Day will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission, parking and most activities are free. The outdoor festival features many children’s activities, including rides on the Kiddie Train, face-painting by Susie the Clown, a petting zoo, and (for a small fee) pony rides. Everyone can enjoy narrated wagon rides through the historic village; demonstrations of local crafts, including blacksmithing and weaving; and a variety of exhibits. Both a “Chinese Auction” (an item-by-item raffle) and a silent auction will offer a selection of unusual items. The Craggy Island Singers and LowBrau Highballers will provide live traditional music.

Ridgefield Farm is supporting The American Red Cross with a Pumpkin Fest. When visitors tell they support the American Red Cross, Ridgefield Farm & Orchard will donate 50% of the customer’s entrance fee to American Red Cross. The Shepherdstown Sweetshop will celebrate its 30- year anniversary today. The bakery will hold a special drawing for Sweetshop goods and will be giving away free cake and ice cream in honor of its birthday,. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Peter Burr Day is being held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Peter Burr Farm in Kearneysville. Join us in celebrating our local history and experience 18th century life through music, demonstrations, exhibits and many activities for children. Visit the oldest standing wood frame house in West Virginia, built circa 1751. Enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of the Peter Burr Farm while learning about Jefferson County’s rich heritage.
