SHEPHERDSTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY

The FOSL Book Group will meet in the Library to discuss the novel Serena by Ron Rash at 4 p.m. on November 30. It’s an unforgettable story of greed, corruption, and revenge.

The Library Board is seeking suggestions about future uses to be made of our present building at German and King Streets. If you are interested in this Market House Re-Use Committee or in the Safe Access Committee (which will study safety along Route 480 at Lowe Drive, which may become the entrance driveway to the new library) please call the Library at (304) 876-2783.

This is a special presentation as a supplement to Shepherd University’s Appalachian Heritage Writer in Residence Program. Dec. 1

Contra Dance: Jack Mitchell calls lively squares and contras to Gypsy Meltdown with Kathy Frey Kerr on fiddle, Colleen Reed on flute, and Keith Gillis on guitar at the War Memorial Building. Beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m., dance starts at 8 p.m. All levels welcome, no partners needed. Please wear clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) will host its 10th Annual Holiday Open House from 9a.m. 5 p.m. at the ATC Visitor Center located at 799 Washington Street in Harpers Ferry. The event will feature a book signing of Brian King’s most recent work title The Appalachian Trail: Celebrating America’s Hiking Trail. Free coffee, cider, and homemade cookies will be available. All event participants will also have a chance to winner a ENO hammock. The winner will be selected at 5 p.m., but contestants do not need to be present to accept the prize.

Dec. 2

The Washington High School chapter of the National Honor Society is sponsoring a Jefferson County Community Choir Concert

at 4 p.m. at the WHS Auditorium. Admission is $5 or a donation. Get in the Spirit of the Season!! Guest performer is Kipyn Martin. Audience Participation! Silent Auction! Join us!! Have fun and support our community. All proceeds will be divided evenly between Meals on Wheels and the Shoe and Coat Fund.

Dec. 4

The Eastern Panhandle Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group of the Brain Injury Alliance of West Virginia is holding a fundraiser at the Charles Town Applebees. The restaurant will donate 15% of guest checks that evening to help us continue the work of supporting individuals in our community and their families who are dealing with traumatic brain injury. A flyer announcing the event must be submitted to gain the donation. Contact members of the organization to secure a copy.

Dec. 5

Shepherdstown’s War Memorial Building will host a special fund-raising event sponsored by the Shepherdstown Public Library and the Jefferson County Development Authority from 6 to 8 p.m. Entitled “The One You Feed,” the free, open-to-the-public gathering expects to bring in a wide selection of organizations and individuals to hear about a newly published book of the same title as the event. It is a special kind of book, designed to be used by schools, organizations, families and almost any collection of people working together. Its expressed purpose is to help groups, large or small, to come together around universal values and to share their differences in a structured way that replaces conflict and opposition with increased understanding.

Dec. 8 & 9

The Shepherdstown School of Dance announces their 6th annual Nutcracker Performance at the Frank Arts Center at Shepherd University. Curtains will rise at 2 and 7 p.m. on Dec. 8, and 2 p. m. on Dec. 9. The performance coincides with Christmas in Shepherdstown festivities.

Dec. 9

South Jefferson Public Library welcomes all to view the work of photographer, Curt Mason, during the months of December and January in the Library Meeting Room of the library. Mr. Mason’s show will be our 41st exhibit at the library. The library also invites public to meet the artist at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Library Meeting Room. Curt Mason is a native Southern Californian who now lives in an 18th century home in Summit Point

Dec. 11

An Ecumenical Service of Prayer and Healing hosted by the Shepherdstown Trinity Episcopal Church will meet form 7-8 p.m. in the church Fellowship Hall. This is a new service of prayer, song and healing. For more information, please call The Rev. Susan MacDonald at 301-667-1165

Dec. 13

Researcher and historian Donald E. Watts will discuss his latest book, Fourth Census of the United States of America, 1820: Occupations and Manufactures in Jefferson County, Virginia, at the Charles Town Library, in the Perry Room, from 7-8:30 p.m. His book is a valuable resource for both historians and genealogists providing significant insight into the commercial life of Jefferson County in the second decade of the 19th century. Mr. Watts’ book will be available for purchase after the talk. The author will donate $5 to the Jefferson County Museum for each book sold.

Dec., 23

Holiday Concert with Trio Gallilei at 4 p.m. Rekindling a passion for Early music, this trio melds the elegance of chamber music with the excitement of traditional music. With founding members of the five piece national touring ensemble Carolyn Surrick on viola da gamba, and harpist Sue Richards joined by 1997 Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel on violin; this holiday concert is sure to please all of your family members and be a highlight of this year’s celebration. The concert will be held in the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.
