Music and Dance offer holiday concert

By Staff | Dec 7, 2012

On Sunday, Dec. 23 at 4 p.m., a holiday concert with Trio Gallilei will be held at the Shepherdstown Presbyterian Church.

Rekindling a passion for early music, this trio melds the elegance of chamber music with the excitement of traditional music in a repertoire that move flawlessly from lush Baroque interpretations of 18th century Irish airs to infectious reels and jigs, from haunting Welsh melodies to Galician Waltzes and Breton dance tunes, stitching a tapestry of texture, harmony, and rhythm. With founding members of the 5 piece national touring ensemble Carolyn Surrick on viola da gamba, and harpist Sue Richards joined by 1997 Scottish fiddle champion Hanneke Cassel on violin.

This holiday concert is sure to please all family members and be a highlight of this year. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, $12 for SMaD members and $8 for children and students. For more information call 304-263-2531 or see the web page at smad.us.

Other news includes a reminder on membership. Annual membership rate is $15/single and $25/family and runs from January until December..

After running successfully in the black for many years, several of SMaD’s dances and concerts ran at a loss this season; although they are not in danger of going under, they want to continue to keep dance alive and well in Shepherdstown until audience numbers increase again.

They also like to provide music or scholarships to other events that a generous donation can help support! Consider making a tax-deductible donation in addition to membership. Any amount helps, but here are some landmarks: $35 buys insurance for an event; $100 pays for a performance by a musician/scholar at a school, hospital or nursing home and gives them a partial scholarship at an Upper Potomac Music Weekend; $200 helps us give a partial scholarship for a dancer at a CDSS dance camp!
