Video highlights Danske Dandrige

By Staff | Dec 7, 2012

The Shepherdstown Opera House and others invite all to “a winter snuggery,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 27.

The acclaimed production by musician/composer Terry Tucker and actor/singer Ardyth Gilbertson is an hour-long video production on “The Immortal Essence of Danske Dandrige: Shepherdstown’s Poet, Garden muse and Historian (1854-1914).” The script was written by Jim Surkamp from research in the Danske Dandridge papers at Duke University. The video won honorable mention at the West Virginia Film Festival in 2004. Terry Tucker composed and recorded ten extraordinary songs with Ms. Dandridge’s poems serving as the lyric.

The presentation was given live to much acclaim on the main stage of the National Conservation Training Center in 2001. This is the first and possibly only time the video will be shown. Ms. Tucker’s poems-turned-to-music are all on her CD, “A Lantern in a Poet’s Garden,” which will be available for sale.

“Ever since we worked on Danske’s life and works, she has been a continuing inspiration and fascination to each of us,” Gilbertson said.

“A Winter Snuggery” is the title of an essay Dandridge wrote in 1900, describing the “one cozy small room” in a house that invariably becomes the chosen, favorite hanging out place for the entire family during winter months.

Children over seven years are welcome.
