SHEPHERDSTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY

The Shepherdstown Library’s free spring programs (for infants through age twelve) resumed in January. Children who attended our fall programs will not need to reregister. Ages four through nine are welcome to attend a free program with hands-on activities about “winter animals and snow birds.” Taught by a Master Naturalist, the program will be held in the Library’s Children’s Department on Thursday, Feb. 7 from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

A free film will be shown at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Hall on Friday, February 8. “Something the Lord Made” stars Mos Def and Alan Rickman in an Emmy-winning account of the pioneers of cardiac surgery for “blue babies.”

Dexter Gordon and other jazz legends play in the masterpiece “‘Round Midnight,” to be shown on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Hall.

The Library will be open on Monday the 18th, Presidents’ Day.

Attention, space explorers! A rocket ship will be visiting the Children’s Department in February, and children are invited to come and see it. Books to borrow in celebration of Valentine’s Day and Black History Month will be on display.

Hundreds of dollars in prize money will be awarded to children in grades one through twelve who are selected as winners in the West Virginia Writers’ Student Writing Contest. Pick up an entry form and information packet in the Children’s Department.

“A Photographic Impression of Jefferson County”: An invitation to come and see what Jefferson County looked like in the late 1970s and early 1980s will be exhibited at the AHA! Fire Hall Gallery, 108 North George St., Charles Town from now through Jan. 26. The exhibit features the photography of Hali Taylor.

Pedal & Paddle is offering free bicycle maintenance classes for girl scouts and boy scouts starting now thru the end of March. The classes will be held Saturday mornings 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Due to limited space each class is limited to 10 kids per class. We will go over the parts of a bike, regular bike maintenance and how to change a flat tire. Please do not bring bikes for the class. You must make and appointment to attend the class. Almost Heaven Event,: The Jefferson County Organization of Democratic Women announces Simone Campbell will be their keynote speaker at this years annual “Almost Heaven” event at 6 p.m. at the Skylight Restaurant and Ballroom in Charles Town Casino. Sister Simone Campbellof “Nuns on the Bus” fame is an activist for social justice. Local singer songwriter Kipyn Martin will provide entertainment. The Annual Choir Festival, sponsored by the Shepherdstown Ministerial Association, will be held at 4 p.m. at Christ Reformed Church, located at 304 East German Street. This program of music and fellowship provided by many churches in the Shepherdstown area will be in tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Thomas C. Segar, vice president of Student Affairs at Shepherd University, will offer reflections on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For additional information, please contact Mary Ann Morgan, service coordinator at 304-876-2411.

From 10 a.m.-3 p.m., volunteers will be stationed in the parking lot across from the The Blue Moon Restaurant in Shepherdstown collecting items of need for the Ronald McDonald House. These items are: toilet paper, paper towels, toilet cleaners, Lysol wipes and disinfecting spray, bleach, dish soap, sponges, baby wipes, shampoo samples, deodorant, mouth wash, new bed sheets and blankets (single), new pillows, trash bags (kitchen and large), new toys (all ages), art supplies, and white cereal bowls.

All Pro Dad Event: Tony Dungy Simulcast and Family Football drills!

Team up with Tony Dungy to hone your skills as a husband and father, while giving your child/ren a day they will always remember. Kids will be guided through age-appropriate football drills designed to encourage and challenge children. Concluding the event is a simulcast message from Tony Dungy on his relationship with Christ and its impact on his life as a husband, father, and coach.

Presented by Charles Town Baptist Church, the All Pro Dad Event will feature five activity drill stations to provide quality time for guys, gals and kids to learn about each other and about God. 7:45-9 pm; Beyond Asana: Ongoing Monthly Study Group All are welcome to join in, any time, in Harmony’s monthly exploration into the philosophy of yoga. Currently, the group is studying the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a step-by-step “recipe” for stilling the chatter of the mind and exploring the true nature of reality.

1-3 pm; Herbal Aphrodisiacs: Many, many herbs have a long history of awakening passion. In this workshop you will learn about a handful of these tantalizing treasures including chocolate, vanilla, rose petals and exotic roots like shatavari (Sanskrit for “woman of a thousand husbands”). You’ll will discuss the appropriate (and inappropriate) uses of these herbs as you sip on herbal brews and make our own sensual truffles, spiced cordials and soothing bath blends to take home.
