The Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University will announce its 23rd season on Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m., with a special free public event at the Shepherdstown Opera House (131 W. German Street). Producing Director Ed Herendeen, with special guests, will introduce the five plays to be produced July 5 28. The 2013 season marks the milestone of 100 plays produced in CATF's history as well as the opening of a new theater in Shepherd Center for Contemporary Arts.
Since its founding in 1991, the Theater Festival has produced 95 new American plays, including 34 world premieres, by 69 different writers. Past plays have gone on to be produced around the country, on Broadway, and adapted to film. The 2012 critic and audience acclaimed world premiere, Gidion's Knot by Johnna Adams, was recently published in American Theatre magazine (featuring CATF production photos), was named the number three play of the year by Washingtonian magazine and is currently under consideration for the prestigious Steinberg/ATCA New Play Award.
