Children's Tree House holding Open House

April 12, 2013

The Children's Tree House Child Development Center located at the National Conservation Training Center will be holding an open house event this Saturday, April 13.

The open house is being held as an opportunity for members of the public to experience the center's Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom.

As Center Director Nickie Weller explained, the Nature Explore Outdoor Classroom is the preschool's all natural developmental playground area, the first of its type in the region.

"We have the only certified nature explore outdoor classroom in the state," she said.

Completed last June, the outdoor classroom includes an art station stocked with natural crafting materials such as moss and leather, an all natural music stage and an all wood building blocks area among other things.

According to its mission statement, the non-profit development center focuses on environmental exploration, nature trail walks, and food and wildlife gardening.

"We take what they need to know to go to school, but teach it through nature," Weller said.

She explained that children in the daycare have access to the greater Conservation Training Center campus for hikes, and have tree forts throughout the property.

In celebration of Earth Day the kids have begun cultivating a full vegetable and fruit garden to be located adjacent to the outdoor play area.

"They're learning how to take care of the earth this month," she said

Weller said the kids will even sell their produce as part of the Morgan's Grove Farmer's Market later this summer.

The Children's Tree House is open to all children, not just those of government employees or training center staff and provides care for children from six weeks old to five-years-old.

For more information about the Children's Tree House visit their web site at www.thechildrenstreehouse.org or call 304-876-7354.

The open house Saturday will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The National Conservation Training enter is located at 698 Conservation Way off of Shepherd Grade road.
