May 17, 2013
Shepherdstown Chronicle

The Potomac Valley Audubon Society will sponsor a bird walk at Harpers Ferry on Wednesday, May 29. Participants will meet at 7 a.m. in the parking area on Shenandoah Street just below the intersection with Route 340.

The walk will be free and anyone with an interest is welcome to come along, regardless of their birding skills. Children will be welcome.

Pre-registration is required and participants must sign a waiver of liability because part of the route is on a railroad track. To pre-register or get more information, go to the Society's website at www.potomacaudubon.org or contact Deb Hale at 304-535-2346 or debhale72@gmail.com.

The walk will focus on the riverfront and old canal areas of Virginius Island. Likely species to be sighted include Orioles, several warbler species, various types of vireos and flycatchers, herons, ducks and raptors. About three miles of level walking will be involved.

Participants should wear sturdy footwear, dress appropriately for prevailing weather conditions, and bring along water and bug spray.

Binoculars will be available for anyone who needs them.

The trip may be canceled in the event bad weather. Various trip details could also change depending on weather or recent bird sightings.
