The Charles Town Cannons are preparing for play in their first year as a Jefferson County team. The Valley League Baseball franchise, owned by Brett and Don Fuller, chose Jefferson as the home of the team once known as the Luray Wranglers. This marks the first team in the league to be located in West Virginia.
With Sager Field serving as their home location, the team will celebrate opening night on Friday, May 31 when they take on Strasburg. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. General admission is $5, with a dicount price of $3 for seniors (65 and older) and $2 for children under 12.
Throwing out the first pitch of the season will be Jefferson High's 10 time state-championship coach John Lowery, who also serves on the Cannons' board of directors. Special events for opening day include a Mascot Race between four mascots including the Chick-fil-A Cow, Glory Days Slider, Papa Johns' Mr. Slice and Aaron's Sales Lease "Lucky Dog."
Team spokesperson Stacy Locke shared that the organization is very excited about playing in Jefferson County.
"We have felt very welcomed," she said.
The Cannons' hope to become an integral part of the community, she said. They are working hard to create partnerships with local organizations and businesses that will benefit everyone.
In addition, the team continues to seek host families for some of the collegiate players. These families will provide a "home away from home" for the players during the summer season.
Volunteer opportunities also abound with the franchise working at ticket booths, the concession stand, as ushers or selling 50/50 raffles during the games.
The Cannons also offer a Cannons Kids Club which provides a Cannons passport ticket, discount admission for $1 to each game, a 20 percent discount of team merchandise, a designated "dinner night" with the players and an autographed picture of the team. Kids can join by visiting the Cannons' website at www.charlestowncannons.com or signing up at the Cannons merchandise location at the games.
The Cannons' season runs from opening night through July 24. Their schedule can be viewed on the above referenced website.
