Smiles and success crown Day Care’s Pre-K Graduation

By Staff | May 24, 2013

On Friday, May 17, wearing colorful robes and wide smiles, the students of the Shepherdstown Day Care’s Pre-Kindergarten program accepted their diplomas at the SDC’s annual Pre-K Graduation Ceremony. The 18 graduates will move on to Kindergarten with a strong foundation of literacy and math skills, courtesy of Pre-K teacher Ashley Holben, who is in her fourth year of teaching SDC’s Pre-K students. In addition to learning these fundamental educational skills, students enjoyed lessons from community artists and from within their own classroom family one of the students was from Italy, and his mother offered Italian language lessons, as well as teaching the children how to cook Italian food.

In 2007 The Shepherdstown Day Care became one of the first day cares to partner with the Jefferson County School Board to provide a Pre-K program for its children. The result of that collaboration is a classroom with a reputation for success.

Wearing a smile as big as any of the graduates, the SDC’s Director, Melissa Holman, explains, “The Pre-K Program is such a great part of our curriculum, and really is providing our children with the skills they need for success. Seven of last year’s Pre-K graduates went on to Shepherdstown Elementary and I’m proud to report six of the seven were on the school’s honor roll this past April. This isn’t a one time thing we’ve kept track of our graduates and the vast majority of them end up on the Honor Roll at the elementary schools they attend.”

The Shepherdstown Day Care serves the families of Jefferson and Berkeley counties and charges tuition according to a sliding scale tied to family income level, providing a quality, affordable childcare experience to families that want to work or further their education to pursue their dreams. The SDC offers a quality, affordable childcare for children from the age of three months to the four-year-old participants in the Pre-K Program; there is also an after-school program for children in kindergarten to age 10. The SDC is accepting inquiries for all age groups, and currently has vacancies in its 3- to 12-month room, its 12- to 18-month room, and a limited number of openings for its Pre-K Program for 2013-2014.
