Marshall to pursue medical career

By Staff | Jun 7, 2013

Shepherdstown resident Eva Marshall was recently accepted into the Honors College at West Virginia University and studied Biology at the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences which is the largest college within WVU.

Marshall graduated from both colleges recently with a Bachelor of Science and achieved Summa Cum Laude (3.94 GPA).

While at WVU Marshall participated in women’s club soccer and was the club president this past year. With the club, she participated in numerous charity events supporting local and national organizations including Relay for Life, Children’s Miracle Network, Ronald McDonald House and the American Red Cross.

Marshall’s giving attitude comes as no surprise as the young woman has chosen to move into the medical field as her career path. She has been accepted into the West Virginia University School of Medicine where she will begin coursework this fall at the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center in Morgantown.

“As of now, the only concrete plans I have for the future consist of practicing medicine. I am unsure about which field I wish to pursue but am excited to explore the many options available to me within the next four years at WVU School of Medicine,” Marshall shared.

A 2009 graduate of Jefferson High, Eva is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Marshall, of Shepherdstown.

While at Jefferson, Eva played on the girl’s soccer team that won the state tournament in the fall of 2007. In addition, she was in the Honors Society and volunteered locally with the Energy Express reading program, Panhandle Home Health and Hospice of the Panhandle.

Graduating from Jefferson with a 4.0 GPA, Marshall earned the Promise Scholarship which she maintained through her time at WVU. It completely paid for her tuition.

Marshall recently received notification that she is receiving a scholarship from WVU that will cover one half of her yearly tuition (about $12,000) for four years (assuming she maintains the minimum required GPA). This award was based on her academic performance as an undergraduate.

Her father said, “As her parent I could not be happier for her. I see her pursuing her potential with hard work and discipline toward her studies. When I think about her childhood it definitely makes sense,” he said. “She always took school work seriously as well as athletics. I am very proud and hopeful that she will find happiness in pursuing this next goal. I think she has what it takes and I think she really wants to help people.

Eva agreed, saying, “It felt amazing to be accepted into the WVU School of Medicine. I worked very hard to achieve in my undergraduate classes and knowing that my efforts paid off is extremely rewarding.”
