SHEPHERDSTOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY

Children ages five and older are invited to a “Modern Pop Art Experience” on Thursday, Oct. 10 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. New York artist Michael Albert will give everyone a free autographed gift, and each child will go home with a recycled art masterpiece. Other After School Programs in October will feature scary stories and Halloween crafts for ages 6 to 12 and run from 4 to 4:45 p.m. on Thursdays.

The Library will be open on Columbus Day, Oct. 14. The F.O.S.L. Board will meet at 2 p.m. that day; call (304) 876-2783 for the location.

During Teen Read Week (Oct, 14 -19) we will be giving out “My Life. My Story. What’s Your Story?” bookmarks. Please stop by to browse our many new Young Adult books.

The F.O.S.L. Book Group will meet at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25 in the Library. Affrilachia: Poems by Frank X. Walker and the novel Strange as This Weather Has Been by Ann Pancake will be discussed.

Join Children’s Librarian Lilly Bauer for a Halloween costume parade and story time on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 10:30 a.m. Children who are infants through age five, home schooled kids, plus their families and friends are all welcome to meet outside the Shepherdstown Library at 100 East German Street. Children registered for Miss Pam’s programs are invited to wear their Halloween costumes during her “Threes, Fours, and Fives” programs on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Inquiries should go to 304-876-0910, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all former hoopsters. We are starting a womens (age 30+) pick-up basketball night on Fridays from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Clarion gym in Shepherdstown. Knowledge of the rules and experience required. Play will include 1/2 court 5×5 and 3×3 games. Cost is $5/hr. Also, recruiting women ages 50-55, 55-60, 60-65 and up, to form basketball teams that will represent West Virginia in the National Senior Games. Huge yard sale to benefit Jefferson County Meals on Wheels at Charles Town Presbyterian Church beginning at 8 a.m. Soups and other food items available.

Contra Dance: Dave Colestock calls lively contras to the fine fiddling of Elke Baker with Larry Unger on guitar and banjo at the Shepherdstown War Memorial Building. Beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m., dance starts at 8. All levels welcome, no partners needed. Please wear clean, soft-soled shoes to protect the floor. An Ecumenical Service of Prayer and Healing hosted by the Shepherdstown Episcopal Church

Oct. 10-13

The Shepherdstown Community Club is sponsoring its annual book sale at the War Memorial Building at King and German streets in Shepherdstown. The sale starts with a wine and cheese preview reception on Thursday Oct. 10 (6-8 p.m., $10 admission). It continues with no entry fee on Oct. 11 and 12 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Oct. 13, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Over 20 categories of books. All proceeds from the sale go to the maintenance of The War Memorial Building and Morgan’s Grove Park. Books in saleable condition are being accepted at the War Memorial Building (German and King streets) anytime between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 7-10. Sorting of books occurs 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, Oct. 7-10. Volunteers are welcome to help with sorting.

Oct. 12

32ns annual Columbus Day Dinner Dance sponsored by the Sons/Daughters of Italy in America, Dan Di Mucci Lodge No. 2465 at the Elks Lodge in Hagerstown, Md.. $35 per person. Call Bob Rizzo at 304-676-5687. Guest speaker will be Nick Casey.

Middleway Day will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission, parking and most activities are free. The outdoor festival features many children’s activities, including free rides on the Kiddie Train. Food, beverages and retail gifts will be for sale by several local organizations. Most of the events take place on East Street Sponsored by the Middleway Conservancy.

Bunker Hill Train Club Show, the largest train show in the tri-state area will be at the Ranson Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show features scale model trains and railroad memorabilia. There will be a running Thomas the Tank Engine display for children to enjoy.

Oct. 13

Citizens Fire Company invites the public and press to attend the Annual Open House in honor of National Fire Prevention Week. The National Theme for this year’s Fire Prevention Week is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”Open House begins at 1 p.m., with demonstrations throughout the day including a live-fire demonstration and rural water supply display as well as Sparky the Fire Dog, moon bounce, food and refreshments, fire extinguisher training and a smoke detector information booth.

Community Party at the Station at Shepherdstown. Everyone is welcome. Music by the Danny Tait Trio, refreshments provided. Donations toward preservation of this treasured community space will be gratefully accepted. All aboard! See you there! 6-8 p.m.
