The Shepherdstown Rotary Club held a dedication for a new Shepherdstown welcome sign last Friday morning.

The sign sits at the north side of W.Va. Route 480 (Duke St.) between the west end of the Rumsey Bridge, near the entrance to the Bavarian Inn.

An effort led by members of the Rotary Club, the new welcome sign project has taken two years to complete.

According to a press release submitted by the Rotary Club, the sign has been erected as a way to “more accurately reflect Shepherdstown’s community pride,” and “welcoming spirit.”

A groundbreaking event was held in July to mark the beginning of construction on the sign.

The total cost of the project reached $22,000 and was paid for by contributions from the Corporation of Shepherdstown, as well as private donations.

Shepherd University alumni and alumnae were on hand Friday morning, representing the four alumni classes, who all contributed donations to the project.

Rotary Club president Paul Woods presided over the dedication ceremony and thanked all those who contributed to making the sign a reality.

“Hopefully this sign will be here in a hundred years,” he said.

Shepherdstown Mayor, Jim Auxer was on hand as ownership of the sign was officially transferred over to the town.

“Public and private contributors came together for the common good,” he said.

“Everyone here loves Shepherdstown and this is just an example of that,” he went on to say.

Woods presented a letter from the Shepherdstown Rotary to Mayor Auxer

“On behalf of the Rotary Club of Shepherdstown I am pleased to officially transfer the ownership of the sign and pedestal from the Shepherdstown Rotary Charitable Fund to the Corporation of Shepherdstown,” it read.

“This sign belongs to the community,” Woods said.
