William P. Griffith

William P. Griffith, former elementary school teacher and an assistant principal, died on Tuesday, Oct, 8, 2013, at his residence in Shepherdstown. The former Monkton, Md. resident was 77.

Born in Martinsburg, to Joseph and Eva Griffith, he attended schools in Berkeley and Jefferson counties. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education at Shepherd College and a Masters degree from Western Maryland College.

He began teaching in Jefferson County before moving to Baltimore County, Md. He taught at Norwood Elementary, Winand Elementary and Sparks Elementary.

While at Sparks Elementary he was promoted to assistant principal. He served in this position at Sparks Elementary, Chase Elementary and Padonia Elementary, where he retired in 1991.

After his retirement he worked as an office manager of a local insurance company.

He was a member of educational organizations NEA, MSTA, and TABCO, a member of Charity Lodge No. 134, Freeland, Md., serving as Worshipful Master in 1980, Past Masters of Baltimore City Organizations, charter member of the Manor Athletic Club, Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 948 in Charles Town.

In high school he lettered in football, basketball and track. In 1955 he was a member of the first unbeaten Shepherd Rams football team. He loved working with children in school and with recreational programs in Baltimore County. He ran teen centers, preteen centers, flag football basketball, softball programs and summer playground activities.

Bill enjoyed sports as a fan and participant. Boating, fishing and golf was among his favorites. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and friends to NASCAR races.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carole Bell Griffith; daughters, Elizabeth Griffith Hinely and husband, Thomas; Lynn Illiano and husband, Antonio and Lisa Scarborough and husband, John, four grandchildren and one niece.

A funeral liturgy was celebrated by the Rev. Fr. Mathew Rowgh at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 10 at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Shepherdstown. Interment will be private and at a later date in Martinsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shepherd University, 1955 Football Team Scholarship, P.O. Box 5000, Shepherdstown, W.Va. 25443.
