Not So Nutcracker Ballet coming to stage

November 22, 2013
Tyler Miller - Special to the Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

Most people have seen a performance of The Nutcracker at some point over the holiday season, but this year the Fragrant Offering Dance Company will be bringing The Not So Nutcracker to Shepherdstown.

FODC is a dance ministry based out of Covenant Baptist Church and will present The Not So Nutcracker this Sunday Nov. 24 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The ballet is a concept developed by director, Christina Franz, which incorporates different styles of dance and music into the classic Nutcracker tale.

This year's performance will feature Irish step dancing along with various Pointe solos as well as gymnastic routines. The ballet features excerpts from Tchaikovsky's classic masterpieces as well as musical arrangements from various artists, including Enya and British composer, Howard Blake.

The Dance Ministry moved to West Virginia five years ago from Long Island, N.Y. It started out small with a handful of girls who attended the Jefferson County Christian Home-School Co-op. The group put on a small end of the year performance for parents which consisted of praise dance pieces that the girls had learned at co-op . According to the group's website, within a short time the pastor of Covenant Church, Terry Crawford, approached me and asked about Fragrant Offering Dance Ministry. Through the support of the church, Fragrant Offering has grown and surpassed the ministry it was in New York.

In the short time it has been in West Virginia it have raised thousands of dollars to benefit Victorious Children's Home, an orphanage in Kakamega, Kenya.

Tickets are already on sale and seats are being added to accommodate the large crowed expected after the company's performance last spring. They are $1 for children five and under, $10 for adults, and can also be purchased at the door. All ticket sales benefit the Victorious Children's Home.

For more information on the FODC and their philanthropy contact Christina Franz at (516) 404-0792 or visit their new website www.fragrantofferingdancecomapny.wordpres.com.
