Christmas in Shepherdstown schedule

Shepherdstown continues its annual Christmas celebration. The full schedule follows below. Most events will be free; those that will require an admission fee are marked on the schedule with an asterisk (*).

In addition to scheduled events and activities, the town's restaurants will offer holiday fare and many shops will be open late on Fridays and Saturdays. The town's regular shops will be supplemented by two special holiday marketplaces that will be open throughout the period: one at the War Memorial Building offering art, home dcor, seasonal items, specialty foods, clothing and jewelry; and another at the Entler Hotel offering wreaths, holiday food, bird houses, pottery, soaps, clothing and candles.

There will be free parking in all the metered spaces in Shepherdstown on Dec. 7 and 8. There will also be free parking from Dec. 14 through Dec. 25. In addition, free parking will be available weekends in Shepherd University parking lot "A" at High and Princess streets, one block from downtown.

Friday, Dec. 6

2:30-3:30 p.m. Music: Shepherdstown Middle School Chorus performance. In front of Library, 100 West German Street.

4-7 p.m. Art Market sponsored by Shepherd University's Department of Contemporary Art and Theater. Students, faculty and alumni will be selling original and unique prints, drawings, photos, crafts and more. Room 112 of the Center for Contemporary Art on the University camps.

4:30-7:30 p.m. "Old Tyme" Christmas Dinner* at the Shepherd University Dining Hall on the University campus. (Admission $4-$8.)

7-11 p.m. Annual Rotary Charity Gala.* At the Shepherdstown Fire Hall. Proceeds benefit various local charities. (Contact Rotary at 304-264-7919 for ticket information.)

Saturday, Dec. 7

10 a.m. Annual Jingle Bell Jog (Registration at 9:00 a.m.). A 5K run through town. Dress in festive attire. Fundraiser for Candy Cane Express, so bring new toy as entrance fee. Shepherd University Wellness Center, 164 University Drive.

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Roasted chestnuts. King and German streets.

10 a.m.-4 p.m. Trinity Episcopal Church Annual Cookie Walk. Includes craft Fair, soup and BBQ. Corner of German and Church streets.

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Bunker Hill Model Train Exhibit. Santa will be present from 12 noon-3:00 p.m. Shepherdstown Train Station, 100 Audrey Egle Drive.

11 a.m. Annual Christmas Parade. German Street, from Church to Princess streets.

11 a.m.-5 p.m. Historic Shepherdstown Museum. One of Shepherdstown's major historic icons will be open. Santa will be present, along with storytellers, from 12 -2 p.m. 129 East German Street.

12-2 p.m. Little House. Another Shepherdstown landmark, a small limestone cottage in full detail, will be open. Princess Street, between German and High streets.

12-2 p.m. Carriage rides with Haflinger ponies. Pick up in front of Town Hall.

1, 6, 7 and 8 p.m. Live Nativity on the lawn of Trinity Episcopal Church. Corner of German and Church streets.

2-4 p.m. Children's Films at the Opera House: The Snowman, The Polar Express. 131 West German Street.

2-4 p.m. Children's Tea*. For boys and girls. Bring your favorite doll, stuffed animal or action figure. War Memorial Building, 102 East German Street. (Admission $7 to $15.)

2:30-4:30 p.m. Festive Pop-Up Dances. Inside, outside, and all around town. By the Goose Route Arts Collaborative.

5:30-7:30 p.m. Art exhibit and reception. Featuring local artists. The Bridge Gallery, 8566 Shepherdstown Pike.

7:30-9:30 p.m. Music: Holiday Gala Concert.* At the Frank Center for the Performing Arts on Shepherd University campus. Sponsored by the Friends of Music. (Admission $20.)

8 p.m. Contra Dance.* Sponsored by Shepherdstown Music and Dance. Preceded by potluck supper and members' art show at 6 p.m. and beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m. War Memorial Building, 102 East German Street. (Admission $4-$10.)

Sunday, Dec. 8

9 a.m.-1 p.m. Shepherdstown Farmers Market. On King Street behind Library.

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Bunker Hill Model Train Exhibit. Santa will be present from 1-3 p.m. Shepherdstown Train Station, 100 Audrey Egle Drive.

2-4 p.m. Music: Annual Christmas Sing-Along at O'Hurley's General Store. All are invited either to sing or just to listen. 205 East Washington Street.

3- 4:30 p.m. Music: Holiday Gala Concert* at the Frank Center for the Performing Arts on Shepherd University campus. Sponsored by The Friends of Music. (Admission $20.)

Saturday, Dec. 14

11 a.m.-5 p.m. Historic Shepherdstown Museum. One of Shepherdstown's major historic icons will be open. Santa will be in residence 12-2 p.m. 129 East German Street.

12-5 p.m. Roasted chestnuts. King and German streets.

12-2 p.m. Little House. Another Shepherdstown landmark, a small limestone cottage in full detail, will be open. Princess Street, between German and High streets.

12-2 p.m. Holiday crafts, games and fun for children. For ages 10 and under. At the Train Station, 100 Audrey Egle Drive.

1-3 p.m. Music: Choral Arts Society of Frederick strolling the streets.

2-3:30 p.m. Children's Film at the Opera House: Elf. 131 West German Street.

2:30-3:30 p.m. Christmas Story Time: Mrs. Claus reading Christmas classics, festive music by Tony M, and other children's activities. At the Train Station, 100 Audrey Egle Drive. Sponsored by Shepherdstown Public Library.

2 and 7 p.m. Nutcracker Ballet* performed by The Shepherdstown School of Dance. Frank Center for the Performing Arts on Shepherd University campus. (Admission $15 and $20.)
