Dear Shepherdstown Businesses,

December 20, 2013
Shepherdstown Chronicle

The Cultural Geography class of Shepherd University would like to thank all of the businesses that participated in the Typhoon Haiyan Red Cross donation drive during the launch of "Christmas in Shepherdstown" on Dec. 6 and 7.

While the snowstorm that weekend overwhelmed most of the community here in Shepherdstown, and foot traffic was limited Our local businesses were able to collect over $500 for survivors of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. While this was less than anticipated, it was still a remarkable donation!!

Nearly half of this total was raised by Hypnocoffee Roastery, located around the corner from the community library and the Sweet Shop bakery. The Hypnocoffee Roastery offered a full quarter of their proceeds for the entire day of the holiday parade (Dec. 7). The Hypnocoffee Roastery collected over $200 for Typhoon survivors in a single day (not including the donations by Hypnocoffee customers in their donation jar).

But we must acknowledge all of the other companies that accepted a donation jar, or offered other donation services. In fact, many business owners donated money from their own tills to compensate for the lack of foot traffic into their store during the snow storm.

As a class, we could not be more pleased by the response of the local Shepherdstown businesses. Please consider patronizing these businesses (listed below) for their efforts on behalf of the Red Cross relief fund:

Hypnocoffee (offered of their proceeds, plus a donation jar)

Bistro 112 (offered a drink special, plus a donation jar)

Mellow Moods (offered a pancake special, plus a donation jar)

Additional donation Jars were accepted at:

H-Mart

Shepherdstown Liquor

Yellow Brick Bank

Betty's

4 Seasons Books

Stepping Out Shoes

The Village Florist

Shaharazade's Tea Room

Sincerely,

Dr. David R. Hixson
