Low turnout for off year election

May 16, 2014
Toni Milbourne - Chronicle Editor , Shepherdstown Chronicle

Just over 4,000 voters turned out to cast their ballots in the May primary election held in Jefferson County Tuesday. Of more than 32,000 registered voters in the county, only 4,385 felt the need to select candidates for the November ballots or to select three seats on the Jefferson County Board of Education.

The Board of Education seats were decided with these primary ballot votes with winners not having to wait for the November election.

Selected to remain on the board was incumbent Scott Sudduth who received 1,984 votes. The top ranking winner was local business-owner Kathy Skinner who received 2,026 of the votes cast. Ranking second in the rankings was Laurie Ogden who had tried to win a seat in two prior elections. Ogden came in with 2,008 votes to garner a seat.

Speaking to the win, Ogden said, "I am humbled and honored to serve the people of Jefferson County this way. Together as an educational community we can make a difference! Thank you to everyone who has invested time, talents, and spread the word. I would not be in this position any other way! Now it is time to create a vision for the future of Jefferson County Schools."

In other races, Republican voters had decisions to make and selected Eric Bell as the candidate for the Harpers Ferry District seat of the Jefferson County Commission. Bell defeated challenger Peter Onoszko with 855 votes to 821 for Onoszko. Bell will face Democratic challenger Ronda Lehman, who ran unopposed in her party Tuesday.

Peter Dougherty, the incumbent for sheriff, will face Republican challenger Steven Sowers, Sr., who defeated his opponent, Brian Parrish, Jr. with a count of 798 vote to 786.

In the run for a ballot spot in the 67th Delegate District, Republican Patricia Rucker handily deafeated contender W. Matthew Harris 423 to 192. Rucker will face off against incumbent Stephen Skinner in the fall election.

These election results are unofficial. Official results will be determined once votes are canvassed.
