Meet Flower Lorenzo, the "Fossil Lady," on Tuesday, July 8 at 10:30 a.m. (Location: Shepherdstown Elementary's Gym, 662 S. Church St.). All ages will get to look at and touch the different types of fossils in her amazing collection, and she will share about how she finds fossils, and how to tell if a rock might be a fossil.
"Turning Around America" will be set up behind the Shepherdstown Library (100 East German Street) from Wednesday, July 16 through Sunday, July 20, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Children 8 and older, teens, and adults are all welcome. Two mobile workshops will provide guidance and materials for the following classes:
Stop Animation will meet 9 a.m. to noon, for 5 days: Wed. 7/16, Thurs. 7/17, Fri. 7/18, Sat. 7/19, and Sun. 7/20. There is space for 16 kids, ages 10 to 15. (Please do not register unless your child is able to attend for all 15 hours of this class.) Kids will be divided into two teams of eight. Each team will develop a story, make wooden puppets, create scenery/backdrops, photograph and edit their film, and show it to the other team by noon on Sun. 7/20.
Make a Wooden Whistle is offered on Wed. 7/16 and again on Fri. 7/18 to ages 8 and older. There is space for 10 people during each hour: you may sign up for 1 to 2 p.m., 2 to 3 p.m., or 3 to 4 p.m., on either 7/16 or 7/18. Students will take turns using one or two lathes, and use hand tools.
Printmaking is offered Thurs. 7/17 and again on Sun. 7/20 to ages 8 and older. There is space for 10 people during each hour: you may sign up for 1 to 2 p.m., 2 to 3 p.m., or 3 to 4 p.m., on either 7/17 or 7/20. Older people will cut wood blocks and younger people will cut potatoes. There will be a big roll of paper for people to print on, and the whole "people of Shepherdstown" artwork will be revealed Thurs. and Sun. before 4 p.m.
Make a Simple Book is offered on Sat. 7/19 to ages 8 and older. There is space for 10 people during each hour: you may sign up for 1 to 2 p.m., 2 to 3 p.m., or 3 to 4 p.m. Each student needs to bring a cereal box to use for their Japanese-style book's covers. Students will be using a paper cutter.
"Fizz, Slurp, Splat!" will be a variety of gross science experiments at the Shepherdstown Train Station (100 Audrey Egle Dr.) on Thursday, July 24 at 5 p.m. Ages 4 and older are invited to make creations such as fake snot, a belching balloon, and slimy DNA strands, while learning the chemistry behind these amazing experiments.
Ages 18 and under are invited to visit the Shepherdstown Library to pick up a reading log in June or July. Children who read library books (or are read to) may return their completed reading logs starting August 4, to receive wonderful prizes from generous local businesses! The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
FIREBALL: An Introduction to Shamanic Practice for Grades 5-9 will be offered on Wednesdays, July 2nd-30th, from 4-5 p.m. at a Shepherdstown location to be announced closer to class time. Shamanism is an ancient spiritual practice that can stand alone or supplement any religion as it teaches our interconnectedness with nature. The future of the earth is in the hands of the rising generation. Students will acquire helping spirits and receive supportive ideas for school and life. The course will be taught by Bill O'Brien, M.A., M.Div., spiritual development practitioner, trained shamanic practitioner, and director of the Nathaniel Center for Spiritual Growth. EARTHEN VESSELS: An Introduction to Shamanic Practice for Adults Ages 18 -108 will be offered on Mondays, July 7th-28th, from 7-8:30, at a Shepherdstown location to be announced closer to class time. Shamanism precedes all religions of the world by tens of thousands of years and teaches reverence for and connectedness with the world of nature. It is a path of direct experience. The course will be taught by Bill O'Brien. Course fee is $80 for adults and $45 for students. Special discount for those 109 and up. THE NATHANIEL PROGRAM: 8 Weeks of Meditation & Spiritual Awareness Training will be offered on Tuesday evenings, July 8th-August 26th, from 7:30-9 p.m. at a Shepherdstown location to be announced closer to class time. Participants will gradually build to 20 minutes of breathing meditation daily. The class will also explore a wide range of spiritual and religious traditions in search of new perspectives and greater awareness. The course will be taught by Bill O'Brien. The annual Shepherdstown July 4 parade will begin at 11 a.m. traveling German Street from Church to Princess. A community picnic will immediately follow at Morgan's Grove Park.
Independence Day extravaganza at Sam Michael's Park. Gates open at 2 p.m. with Art in the Park sponsored by AHA! Vendors will be on site with many offerings as will food vendors. Live music on the stage beginning at 5 p.m. Fireworks display at dark. There is no cost for the event but a donation is welcome! Bring a picnic and blanket and enjoy great family fun!

Summer Seasonal Flow with Gena: 2-4 p.m. This Harmony workshop will blend Ayurvedic philosophy, slow Vinyasa Flow and Yin Yoga to bring you into balance for the summer season. Summer is the time when Pitta dosha (fire and water elements) is most prominent. Some ways that Pitta can go out of balance during this time include: inflammation, pain, digestive disorders, stress or a feeling of "burning your candle at both ends". This workshop will offer a Pitta-pacifying yoga practice, diet and lifestyle recommendations, and light snacks to bring you into balance with this season and leave you feeling soothed and refreshed.
