Tuesday, Oct. 28: A Halloween parade for members of our Lap Babies, Ones, and Twos groups will meet in costume outside the Shepherdstown Library at 11:15 a.m. After the parade there will be a special story time at the War Memorial Building (102 E. German St.) with Children’s Librarian Lilly Bauer.

Wednesday, Oct. 29: Ages 5 through 12 are invited to hear spine-tingling stories and do Halloween crafts in Anne’s After School Program from 4 to 4:45 p.m. School-age children are invited to attend every Wednesday in October at 4 p.m., for many more spooky stories and frightful crafts!

Oct. 31: The FOSL (Friends of the Shepherdstown Library) Book Club is in search of some new members. The group will meet at 4 p.m. in the Shepherdstown Library to discuss Orphan Train by Christina Kline. Her book is about “loss, adaptability, and courage.” Visit 100 E. Intermediate Bridge players are invited to join an informal group meeting every Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Trinity Episcopal Chapel. All are welcome and walk-ins are encouraged. For more information, contact 304-876-6244.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“Story Time: Transforming Your Life Through the Power of Story” is a gathering for individuals of any faith or no faith. Each week we will explore story from a different approach and we will see where each of us “comes in” to the story. The co-facilitators are Bill & Linda O’Brien. Story Time will meet on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9 p.m at Hendrix Hall in the St. Agnes Parish Center at 106 S. Duke Street. A donation of $10 per night is requested. Ricco Gallery announces a timely exhibit of photos of daily life in Syria before the war, featuring the work of Shepherdstown photographer Hyang Suk Oh. The public is invited to an opening reception for the show from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 at the gallery, 125 West German Street. The works in the show depict everyday life in Damascus, based on Oh’s month-long visit there in 2009. SCC BOOK SALE at the War Memorial Building (King & German streets in Shepherdstown). Starts with a wine and cheese preview reception on Friday, Oct. 17 (6-8 p.m., $10 admission). It continues with no entry fee October 18 & 19, on Saturday (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) & Sunday from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. All proceeds from the sale go to the maintenance of the War Memorial Building and Morgan’s Grove Park.

Oct. 18

Seasonal Flow Workshop with Gena Rockwell: 18, 2-4 p.m. Join Gena Rockwell, a long-time local yoga teacher and massage therapist, for this workshop, suitable for all levels. It will include ayurvedic lifestyle and dietary recommendations, yin yoga practice, and an extended healing guided relaxation. Vata-balancing tea will be served. Cultivating Inner Strength and Stability with Rebekah Goldstein-Hawes: 4:30-6:30 p.m. Rebekah Goldstein-Hawes will host a yoga workshop on “Cultivating Inner Strength and Stability: Let Your Body Be Your Anchor.” The workshop is suitable for most levels (not recommended for beginners) and will focus on finding the source of our sustainable strength and learning to bring that into each pose with ease and grace. Sustainable Solutions, LLC will host an Open House at 4419 Kearneysville Pike, Shepherdstown at 2 p.m. They are excited to open their doors to the community and celebrate their new building and office space. The company’s mission is to help landowners generating ecologic, economic, and social returns from their land. James R. Remuzzi, president and founder of Sustainable Solutions, LLC will provide a short presentation on the company. Food and beverages will be provided. There will be native trees and shrubs for sale, a raffle, and kids’ activities.

All are welcome to attend and enjoy free fun and education for the whole family.

Shepherdstown Community Club dinner ($15) followed by a square dance demonstration, (audience participation welcome but not required) by the Mountaineer Twirlers of Charles Town & the Panhandlers of Martinsburg War Memorial Building (King & German streets in Shepherdstown) Dinner starts at 6:30 and program ends at 9. Members of the community are invited to join friends and neighbors are invited to join at 10:30 a.m. to learn more about our “Village” Shepherdstown Area Independent Living (SAIL). These sessions are held at a member’s home to offer updates about SAIL, a Non-profit member-supported organization whose mission is to enable its members to remain active, connected, independent and in their homes and community as long as possible. Current members are encouraged to attend as well and to bring a guest. Dr. Jim Price will present the last event in the Historic Shepherdstown 2014 Speaker Series, “Strange as it Seems: Actual Happenings in Shepherdstown.” His talk will begin at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Byrd Center for Legislative Studies. Dr. Price will share with the audience a compendium of little known facts about events that have occurred during the town’s long and colorful history. Given the popularity of Dr. Price’s presentations, you may wish to arrive a bit early to guarantee yourself a seat.

VAMPIRE’S COSTUME BALL at the War Memorial Building (King & German streets in Shepherdstown) from 9 p.m. to 1a.m. with music by Sacred Groove, Tarot Card reading … and much more. $15 single & $25 couple at the door. Haunted Hallway at the War Memorial Building (King & German streets in Shepherdstown) , starting at dusk bring the children for Halloween treats and see a display of Halloween decorations sure to excite and scare those of any age with a lively imagination.

Nov. 1

“CrossFit 304 Our Community”: This CrossFit 304 fundraiser will provide supplies for the homeless shelters in Jefferson County through Community Ministries. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will complete a 10-minute AMRAP of: 10 sit-ups, 10 burpees, 10 air squats, and 50 double unders (or 100 singles). There is a $10 participation fee (100% will be donated). Participants are encouraged to get sponsors or donations in addition to their participation fee. There will be a prize given to the person who collects the most donations! Canned or packaged goods for the food pantry are also welcome. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Women are hosting a free program from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in McKinley Hall at 209 W. Main St. in Sharpsburg, Maryland.Mike Shea, outpatient services director for Brook Lane, will present a program called “The Emotional Roller Coaster.” Light refreshments will be served. An “Introduction to Rain Gardens” workshop that is free and open to the public at Snyder Environmental in Kearneysville. The purpose of this workshop is to generate local interest in rain gardens, which are designed to help manage storm water and improve local water quality, and also to make the public aware of programs that are available in the Elks Run Watershed to offer financial assistance to homeowners wishing to install rain gardens and other programs available to all of Jefferson County that offer financial assistance on other practices that improve local water quality.

New Street UMC, corner of New and Church Streets, in Shepherdstown, will be holding a soup, sandwich, and pie lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Soup by the quart may be available after 1:00 P.M. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy good food and fellowship. For more information call 304-876-2362.
