Oct. 31: The FOSL (Friends of the Shepherdstown Library) Book Club is in search of some new members. The group will meet at 4 p.m. in the Shepherdstown Library to discuss Orphan Train by Christina Kline. Her book is about “loss, adaptability, and courage.” Visit 100 E. Nov. 20 It’s “Read to Me Day,” celebrated during “West Virginia Family Reading Week,” (Nov. 16 to 22), plus November is “Picture Book Month.” Families are invited to borrow some Thanksgiving stories or some brand-new, award-winning picture books.

Nov. 21 New members are always welcome at the FOSL (Friends of the Shepherdstown Library) Book Club. The group usually meets the last Friday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Shepherdstown Library; call the Library in November to find out whether they’ll meet on Nov. 21 or 28. The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Ricco Gallery announces a timely exhibit of photos of daily life in Syria before the war, featuring the work of Shepherdstown photographer Hyang Suk Oh. The public is invited to an opening reception for the show from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24 at the gallery, 125 West German Street. The works in the show depict everyday life in Damascus, based on Oh’s month-long visit there in 2009. Trick or Treat will be observed in Shepherdstown between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m.

Haunted Hallway at the War Memorial Building (King & German streets in Shepherdstown) , starting at dusk bring the children for Halloween treats and see a display of Halloween decorations sure to excite and scare those of any age with a lively imagination.

Nov. 1

“CrossFit 304 Our Community”: This CrossFit 304 fundraiser will provide supplies for the homeless shelters in Jefferson County through Community Ministries. 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will complete a 10-minute AMRAP of: 10 sit-ups, 10 burpees, 10 air squats, and 50 double unders (or 100 singles). There is a $10 participation fee (100% will be donated). Participants are encouraged to get sponsors or donations in addition to their participation fee. There will be a prize given to the person who collects the most donations! Canned or packaged goods for the food pantry are also welcome. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Women are hosting a free program from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in McKinley Hall at 209 W. Main St. in Sharpsburg, Maryland.Mike Shea, outpatient services director for Brook Lane, will present a program called “The Emotional Roller Coaster.” Light refreshments will be served. An “Introduction to Rain Gardens” workshop that is free and open to the public at Snyder Environmental in Kearneysville. The purpose of this workshop is to generate local interest in rain gardens, which are designed to help manage storm water and improve local water quality, and also to make the public aware of programs that are available in the Elks Run Watershed to offer financial assistance to homeowners wishing to install rain gardens and other programs available to all of Jefferson County that offer financial assistance on other practices that improve local water quality.

All levels welcome, no partner necessary, Beginners workshop at 7:30 p.m.

At 3 p.m. the Jefferson County Historical Society will hold its Fall Meeting at Charles Town’s Old Opera House. Following a brief business meeting, author Austin Washington and his father, John A. Washington, preeminent Washington family historian, will discuss Austin’s book, “The Education of George Washington.” For additional information about the book, visit the web site, www.austinwashington.com. Membership forms will be available for those attending who are not members and wish to join the Society.

Dedication of the new Veteramn’s Memorial Pavilion at Sam Michael’s Park, 235 Sam Michaels Lane, at 11 a.m. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

6-6:40 p.m., Crystal Bowl Concert: Ann Craig performs an extraordinary “sound meditation” using eight quartz crystal bowls that fill the Harmony studio with an energetic yet peaceful vibration that soothes and aligns mind, body and soul. Participants can sit in chairs or lie on mats. Donations gratefully accepted. Location: Harmony, 211 E. New St.

New Street UMC, corner of New and Church Streets, in Shepherdstown, will be holding a soup, sandwich, and pie lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Soup by the quart may be available after 1:00 P.M. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy good food and fellowship. For more information call 304-876-2362.

Nov. 10

7:15-8:30 p.m.: FREE Intro to Yoga Class: Join Harmony co-studio owner and director Judy Jenner for a fun introductory to yoga class. She’ll lead you through basic yoga poses, guide you into restorative relaxation, and answer all your questions about the practice of yoga and how to get started at Harmony! Nov. 15

Jefferson County Parks and Recreation will host their annual Wee Warrior Dash at 10:30 a.m. at Sam Michael’s Park. Kids ages 3-15 are invited to join in this one-mile obstacle fun run. There is no cost to participate. Afterward, visit the Community Center for the annual craft fair and chili cookoff.
