Betty Geneva Engle Kidwiler

Betty Geneva Engle Kidwiler, 81, of Engle, passed away Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson.

Born Jan. 24, 1933, in Engle, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Earl Engle and Mary Elizabeth Gageby Engle.

She was a member of Engle United Methodist Church for more than 70 years.

Betty graduated valedictorian of Harpers Ferry High School, class of 1951. She graduated from Shepherd College in 1955, and began her teaching career at Harpers Ferry Grade School. She later went to Grand View after schools were integrated, and then on to C.W. Shipley, retiring in 1995. She was affectionately known by her students as “kid killer.” She continued to volunteer at Shipley until June 2014. Until missing that last day of school, she had never missed the first or last day of class for 76 years, since she was 6 years old. She played the piano at Engle United Methodist Church since 13 years of age. Betty married Jim in October 1957. She loved counting the passing train cars from her front porch.

She is survived by one sister, Dorothy Engle Butler and husband, Calvin of Engle; one niece, Ida Mary Hull and husband, Lynn “Ed” of Shepherdstown; special friends and caregivers, Lisa Franzen of Shepherdstown, Tammy Wilt of Kearneysville, and Rob and Cathy Whitmore of Shenandoah Junction; and numerous cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Jim” Kidwiler, in 2002.

Services were held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, with the Rev. Luther Osment and the Rev. Douglas Fraim officiating. Interment was in Uvilla Methodist Cemetery.
