Police investigate break-ins

By Staff | Nov 14, 2014

The Shepherdstown Police Department is continuing the investigation of two recent break ins at local businesses. On Monday Nov. 3, Shepherdstown Police were contacted after Betty’s Restaurant employees found a window had been shattered near the back of the German Street property.

Further investigation revealed that an ATM machine owned by the restaurant had been stolen with money inside, though no other items were taken.

“They did kick over a couple of booths that were in there, causing damage,” Shepherdstown Police Chief David Ransom said.

Ransom said that so far no witnesses of the crime have surfaced.

“Nobody’s coming forward yet.” he said.

Betty’s has offered a $1,500 cash reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible of the incident.

Chief Ransom said he has advised local business owners to empty all cash registers overnight, following a series of thefts last winter along German street, that targeted businesses like Mellow Moods Cafe and Two Rivers Treads.

On Monday, Oct. 6 the Mecklenburg Inn, located on East German street also reported a break in. In this case, a suspect was captured by the bar’s video surveillance system.

Chief Ransom said Shepherdstown Police have investigated several leads following the incident, but the case remains open.

“Sergeant King is following up on new information,” he said.

In an interview Tuesday, Chief Ransom a “steady flow,” of information has come in since the crimes were first reported.

“Everything is a work in progress,” he said.

“We are constantly getting leads.”

The Shepherdstown Police Department is requesting that anyone with information regarding the identity of the person in the video and photos, contact police personnel immediately.

There is a $500 dollar reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect in the Mecklenburg Inn case.
