Jefferson goes 4-3 in its December games

After winning twice in its first three games against private schools, Jefferson High defeated Sherando, 59-51, after taking a 10-point lead after the first quarter. Jimmy King, Marcus Roper and Michael Bratton all scored in double figures for the Cougars.

After a 51-45 loss to another private school, Chavez of Washington, D.C., the Cougars had a 3-2 pre-Christmas record. King was the only player to reach double figures in the second loss of the young season.

In a two-night tournament hosted by Fairmont Senior, the Cougars were outrun and outscored by Villa Angela-St. Joseph of Cleveland, Ohio, 88-43, to even the record at 3-3. In their other game in Fairmont, the Cougars defeated Harvey High of Painesville, Ohio, 60-53.

The record was 4-3 in games played in December. When the calendar moved to 2016, Jefferson played its first game of the new year against Hedgesville, losing to the Eagles, 51-39.

Jefferson’s next game is tonight (Friday, Jan. 8) at home against Spring Mills.

Washington High was 0-6 in its early-season struggles.

The Patriots opened with a 71-54 loss to Sherando High of Frederick County, Virginia.

Following that loss to the Warriors, the Patriots fell to Petersburg, 54-46, and returned the season opener with Sherando, where they lost again, 69-57, for the second time to the Virginians.

After a 63-54 loss to Hampshire in a game played in Romney, the Patriots continued to be winless when they dropped a long 78-40 decision to James Wood High of Winchester.

In its first game in January, the Patriots fell to Martinsburg, 97-48, to remain winless.

Washington hosts Musselman on Friday, Jan. 8.
