CHARLES TOWN - A Shepherdstown woman has been identified as the individual who died Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 340.

Abby Northrop, 67, died as a result of the accident, according to a Facebook post by the Charles Town Police Department. At approximately 2:44 p.m. Monday, emergency personnel responded to the accident involving an entrapment on Berryville Pike and Augustine Avenue near Washington High School.

Charles Town Police Department Chief Chris Kutcher confirmed Monday evening two patients were transported by ambulance to Jefferson Medical Center, and one victim died.

Northrop was transported to a local medical facility, where she subsequently passed. Steven Lee, 51, of Kearneysville, was also transported to a local medical facility for injuries sustained in the crash, according to the post.

The extraction of the entrapped individual took approximately 15 minutes, according to emergency services records. Citizens Volunteer Fire Department assisted and completed the extraction at the scene, according to a spokeswoman with the Jefferson County Emergency Center.

"Preliminary reports indicate that Northrop's vehicle traveled through a red traffic signal while traveling southbound on U.S. 340," according to the post.

In doing so, Northrop struck Lee's vehicle, which was turning left from Augustine Avenue onto U.S. 340, according to the post.

Prior to the crash, dispatch received a reckless driving report from a concerned citizen regarding Northrop's driving actions, the post said.

Investigation into this incident continues.
