‘Farm to Fork’ dinner will highlight local growers

The Shepherdstown Farmers Market will once again offer its Farm to Fork dinner, which will be held on July 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. on King Street behind the Shepherdstown Library. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved into the Shepherdstown Community Club.

The event, originally developed by Inge Ledden, who continues to organize the annual dinner, will highlight the culinary skills of many Shepherdstown restaurants, which will use food provided by contributors to the weekly Farmer's Market.

"This is a 'local' movement and a wonderful example of the local community supporting the local farmer, and the farmer supporting the local restaurants back into the local community. With this event, we are teaching the value of "local" and showing how it works through food," said Ledden.

The farms, all of which are from the immediate surrounding area, supply the ingredients for the dinner. The restaurants then prepare the food.

According to Ledden, restaurants preparing dishes for the event this year include the Bavarian Inn, Blue Moon Cafe, The Press Room, Domestic, Bistro 112, Shepherdstown Sweet Shop, Town Run Tap House and Community Pub, Community Garden Market and the Tonic Herb Shop.

"The menu includes stuffed pork loin, prepared by the Bavarian; sage infused polenta from Domestic; fresh market green beans with roasted tomatoes from Bistro 112; and the favorite, picked red onions from the Pressroom," Ledden said. She added that Phil Mastrangelo, former owner of Mellow Moods, will offer a vegetarian component for the meal. On the dessert side of things will be yellow cake topped with seasonal fruit and honey, a lavender cookie and a dark chocolate square.

Tickets for the event are $50 per plate. Those seeking to purchase a seat can do so on Sunday at the Farmer's Market or during the week at the Shepherdstown Sweet Shop.

Funds raised from the event will help support the local Farmer's Market, which is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sundays, now through December. The market is located on South King Street, behind the Shepherdstown Public Library, the same location where the dinner will be held.

Ledden said the event is an example of support throughout the community.

"Ninety-eight percent of the food comes directly from the market," Ledden said. "The people in the community support the restaurants, who support the local farms. It's pretty amazing."
