Now 0-5, Cougars fall to Keyser rally

September 28, 2018
Bob Madison - For the Chronicle , Shepherdstown Chronicle

SHEPHERDSTOWN -- Living on the edge. Tight-rope walking to high school football victories. The Kardiac Kids from Keyser.

For the second straight week, Keyser spotted an opponent a long lead . . . and then reeled them in to record another pulsating win, by snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.

The latest victim was winless Jefferson.

After spotting then-unbeaten Weir a 41-14 third-quarter lead the week before, and then galloping back for a 42-41 win in the Northern Panhandle, the heart-stopping Golden Tornado saw Jefferson take a 24-7 lead in the third period last Friday in Keyser, before roaring back with 24 unanswered points, to register a pulsating 31-24 win over the Cougars.

Keyser improved to 3-1 overall, while the Cougars went to 0-5, before getting a week without a game on their schedule.

Jefferson once owned a 24-7 lead in the second half, as Corbin Pierson scored on a first-quarter run, Jacob Wallace booted an impressive 44-yard field goal, John Gidney grabbed a 70-yard scoring throw from Pierson and Pierson had another scoring pass in the third quarter.

From then on, the scoring was owned completely by the homestanding Golden Tornado.

A short Buddy Clay run to paydirt shrank the Jefferson lead to 24-13. Evan Moreland's scoring romp clipped the Keyser deficit to only 24-19.

It was an Aaron Lyons run in the middle of the fourth period that pushed the Golden Tornado to a 25-24 lead, meaning Keyser had counted the game's last 18 straight points.

Drae Allen then scored the last Golden Tornado points with his 17-yard run. It was 31-24 at that point late in the game.

Jefferson's final possession could not get the Cougars any points. And in the second half, the Cougars had been blanked.

Jefferson has an open date this week, before going to Berkeley County to see the Spring Mills Cardinals on Oct. 5.
