Friday, May 29: The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) Book Club will discuss The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (by Daniel James Brown) at 4 p.m. in the library.

Monday, June 15 is the first day that reading logs will be available in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department for kids interested in earning prizes by reading (or being read to) during the Library’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Ages 10 and older are encouraged to enter our art contest as well; top entries will win an iTunes gift card. There will be a series of free weekly events generously funded by the Friends of Shepherdstown Library (FOSL): no registration is required, and the doors open 30 minutes prior to each show. The first one is for all ages, on Wednesday, June 24 at 11 a.m. in the Shepherdstown Elementary School gym (662 S. Church St.): interactive music with children’s performer Tony M. His performance is called “Put Something Good in the World.”

The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) Book Club will discuss Brian Payton’s The Wind is Not a River on Friday, June 26 at 4 p.m. in the Library. The novel is a survival story set in the bleak (and windy) Aleutian Islands during World War II.

Learn about reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals in a Wildlife Ambassadors show at the Community Club’s War Memorial Building (102 E. German St.) on Thursday, July 9 for ages three and older.

On Tuesday,July 14 at 11 meet our local heroes: a Shepherdstown Police dog and members of the Shepherdstown Fire Department, as well as make your own hero mask (at the War Memorial Building for ages three and up.)

Monday, July 20 is an interactive children’s theater experience: be part of the show or just watch a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk” by the Rainbow Company, for ages three and older at the Shepherdstown Elementary School gym.

Author/performer Kevin Sherry will entertain ages three and up with stories and songs on Tuesday, July 28 at the War Memorial Building.

In “Jazz for Kids,” musicians Antonio Underwood and Bassell Franks will play and explain the basic elements that create jazz improvisation on Thursday, July 30 for ages three and older, at 11 a.m. in the War Memorial Building.

“Every Hero Has a Story” Teen Art Show: all are invited to come see amazing entries from our teen art contest and to meet the artists on Monday, Aug. 3 at 4 in the War Memorial Building.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Business owners, managers and other movers and shakers are invited to partake in the Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Join Dana Mitchell in front of the Shepherdstown Library and experience her Mysteries Walk. Free Group Hypnosis For Healing, 6:45-7:30 p.m. Michelle DeStefano, certified consulting hypnotist, will conduct group-hypnosis sessions designed to promote healing on a body-mind-spirit level. This is a 45-minute session where she will guide participants to activate their subconscious mind to promote healing and a healthy sense of well-being. The sessions will continue the last Friday of each month beginning. Donations accepted gratefully, but not necessary. Join in the fun at a basket bingo fundraiser at Sam Michael’s Park. Doors open at 5 p.m. with games starting at 7. Raffles, bingo, tips and more. All proceeds benefit the Jefferson County Indeendence Day celebration. Advance tickets are $20. At the door price is $25.

Oakland Church will kick off Oakfest, its annual carnival, at 6 p.m.. Oakfest will run through Saturday, June 6. Edgar Cayce’s non-profit A.R.E. 40th Mid-Atlantic Region Retreat will be held at Shepherd University in the Student Center from June 5 – 4 p.m. to June 7- noon. The program, From Soul Groups to Self-Worth: Finding Our Cosmic Destiny in the Cayce Readings, will be presented by Sidney Kirkpatrick, author of thedefinitive Cayce biography described by The New Yorker magazine as “a codex for the New Age“. Crystal Bowl Concert, 6-6:40 p.m. Ann Craig performs an extraordinary “sound meditation” using eight quartz crystal bowls that fill the Harmony studio with an energetic yet peaceful vibration that soothes and aligns mind, body and soul. “Ricco Paints: A Debut Exhibit,” opens with an artist’s reception from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Ricco Gallery, 125 West German Street (next door to The Press Room). The exhibit features the results of years of painting by gallery owner Riccardo Accurso. Because has traveled and lived in locations as diverse as Greece, Mexico, Spain and Argentina, inspirations for Ricco’s paintings-in watercolor, oil and acrylic-range from the Potomac River at Shepherdstown to the rocky coast of the Mediterranean and the Andes mountains in Argentina. The 14th annual Ranson Festival and 5th annual Car Show will be held with a variety of attractions. At the festival there will be arts and crafts, entertainment, pony rides and more.
