Reading logs are available in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department for kids interested in earning prizes by reading (or being read to) during the Library’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Interim prizes will be awarded weekly until July 27, the first day to receive a certificate of completion and a coupon book. Families are encouraged to join Libby Sturm, the president of the Library’s Board of Trustees, in the Fourth of July parade. Meet her at 10:30 a.m. on Church Street in Shepherdstown. Libby will be walking with storyteller Fanny Crawford and face painter Jill Harner, (both of whom will be participating in the Rotary Picnic at Morgan’s Grove Park from noon to 3 p.m.). At 11 a.m. the parade will go down German Street to Princess Street. Be sure to dress up; decorate your wagons, bikes, and dogs! The Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) Book Club will discuss Kazuo Ishiguro’s The Remains of the Day on Friday, July 31 at 4 p.m. in the Library. This novel of a butler in post-war England won the Booker Prize.
There will be a series of free weekly events funded by the Friends of Shepherdstown Library (FOSL): no registration is required, and the doors open 30 minutes prior to each show. Learn about reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals in a Wildlife Ambassadors show at the Community Club’s War Memorial Building (102 E. German St.) on Thursday, July 9 at 11 a.m. for ages three and older. On Tuesday, July 14 at 11:00 meet our local heroes: a Shepherdstown Police dog and members of the Shepherdstown Fire Department, as well as make your own hero mask (at the War Memorial Building for ages three and up.) Monday, July 20 at 11 a.m. there will be an interactive children’s theater experience: be part of the show or just watch a performance of “Jack and the Beanstalk” by the Rainbow Company, for ages three and older at the Shepherdstown Elementary School gym (662 S. Church St.). Author/performer Kevin Sherry will entertain ages three and up with stories and songs at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 28 at the War Memorial Building. In “Jazz for Kids,” musicians Antonio Underwood and Bassell Franks will play and explain the basic elements that create jazz improvisation on Thursday, July 30 for ages three and older, at 11 a.m. in the War Memorial Building. “Every Hero Has a Story” Teen Art Show: all are invited to see amazing entries from our art contest and to meet the artists on Monday, Aug. 3 at 4 p.m. in the War Memorial Building.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Business owners, managers and other movers and shakers are invited to partake in the Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Join Dana Mitchell in front of the Shepherdstown Library and experience her Mysteries Walk. Street Fest returns to Shepherdstown with vendors opening at 10 a.m. Completely filling German Street, the event will offer not only exceptional wares for purchase from local merchants and visiting vendors, but also entertainment on two stages throughout the day. Energy Yoga Workshop with Jenna Newsome, 8:30-9:45 a.m., free, All Levels Welcome balance and harmony inside and out using these specialized movements and stretches for energy health. Polarity yoga draws on hatha yoga, ayurveda, naturopathy, craniosacral therapy and reflexology, using meditative stretches to align and heal. Jefferson County celebrates the Independence Day holiday with a fireworks extravaganza at Sam Michael’s Park. Gates open at 2 p.m. with live music on stage beginning at 6 p.m. A variety of vendors will be set up offering wares as well as tasty treats. Coolers are welcome with picnic dinners, but no glass, alcohol or pets allowed. The event is free to the public; however, donations at the gate are appreciated. The annual Shepherdstown July 4 parade kicks off at 11 a.m. traveling down German Street. All are welcome to attend the annual picnic at Morgan’s Grove following the parade.

Jala Yoga at Creekside Station, 3119 Valley Avenue in Winchester, is having its first ever Yoga Camp from 2-4 p.m. everyday. “Magnificent ME” is for kids ages 7-12, who will practice yoga and explore their creative sides with instructor Jennifer Turman-Bayliss. No ordinary camp, Magnificent ME will encourage kids to explore the magnificent person they were created to be. Along with yoga, youngsters will learn about the meaning of their special birth date, dance, play music and create their own dream board. Muscular and Organic Energy Yoga Workshop-All levels, 7-9 p.m. The true purpose of life is to celebrate the beauty and power of our true nature. In order to experience this, we need to draw inside and connect with the source. From that integration with the core of the body, we have the support and potential to extend organically outward and more fully express the yoga postures. I will guide participants to experience this through a series of sun salutations, forward bends, standing poses, and optional inversions. A summer Fresh Feast on the Farm dinner will be held at “The Home Place,” home of Lane and Sam Donley near Shepherdstown. The dinner will feature white table cloth dining and a multi-course meal served plated and accompanied by West Virginia wines.
