Monday, Oct. 12: The Shepherdstown Library will be open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Columbus Day.

Oct. 18 through 24: Celebrate Teen Read Week by finding something to read and escaping from your everyday life: “Get Away @ Your Library!”

Tuesday, Oct. 27: A Halloween parade for all story time friends will be held: meet in costume outside the Shepherdstown Library at 10:30 a.m. After the parade there will be a special story time at the War Memorial Building (102 E. German St.) until noon with Children’s Librarian Christy Hagerty.

Wednesday, Oct. 28: Ages 5 through 12 are invited to hear spine-tingling stories and do Halloween crafts in Anne’s After School Story Time from 4 to 4:45 p.m. School-age children are invited to attend every Wednesday in October at 4 p.m., for many more spooky stories and frightful crafts!

Friday, Oct. 30: The FOSL Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. in the Library to discuss The Obituary Writer by Ann Hood. A reviewer said ‘her intricate inquiry into grief, guilt and love is haunting.”

Saturday, Oct. 31: Children three and older are invited to a special “Halloween” Saturday story time with songs, stories, and a craft at 11 a.m. in the Library’s Children’s Department.

The Shepherdstown Library’s free programs continue through Dec. 9; no registration is required. “Lapbabies” for children birth through 18 months is on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. “Time for Twos” meets from 11:15 to noon on Tuesdays. The “Three to Five Year Olds” program is Wednesdays from 11:15 to noon. The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Business owners, managers and other movers and shakers are invited to partake in the Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk at 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Join Dana Mitchell in front of the Shepherdstown Library and experience her Mysteries Walk. The paintings of local artists Fran Skiles and Don Black will be featured at the annual Abstractions exhibit at The Bridge. Also on display will be new work by local abstract painter Rebecca Grace Jones whose work is an ongoing presence at the gallery. The exhibit opens Oct. 10 with a reception scheduled from 6-8; the closing date is Nov. 15 with an artists discussion to take place later in October, TBD. Oct. 10

Washington High School will host the Fourth Annual Marching Band Classic, at the Terry L. Marcus Stadium at 1 p.m. The gates will open at noon. Marching bands from schools in Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia will be showing off their best music and marching abilities to entertain and to earn the coveted first place trophy. The cost of admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for those six years of age and under.

Anderson Electric, LLC is once again conducting a Morgan Grove Road cleanup as part of the W. Va. Adopt a Highway statewide fall cleanup. From 1 to 3 p.m., safety vests, gloves and bags will be provided. All volunteers must be over 12 years of age. The new academic year is upon us and with it one of its highlights: presentations in the Faculty Research Forum. Our first talk of the year will be offered by David B. Gordon (Department of History) whose talk is entitled: “A Tale of Two Diplomats: He Fengshan, Sugihara Chiune, and the Jewish Flight from Nazi Europe” (the link will lead you to the abstract and our new site!). Shepherdstown Community Club will host their legendary Book Sale at the War Memorial Building Two floors of books. A wine and cheese reception will be held on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. for those who wish to preview and purchase. Cost is $10.
