Friday, May 27: Friends of the Shepherdstown Library (FOSL) will hold its annual wine and cheese reception and book sale preview from 6 to 8 p.m. at the War Memorial Building (102 East German Street; $10 per person). Please call the Library in May at 304-876-2783 regarding donations for the sale. The FOSL Book Club will discuss Finding Nouf by Zoe Ferraris at 4 p.m. in the library.

Saturday, May 28: FOSL book sale is 10 to 4 p.m. in the War Memorial Building. To benefit area schools, interested book sale supporters are asked to make a $10.00 donation prior to — or during — the sale weekend. Participating schools will then be able to receive a box of children’s books!

Sunday, May 29: FOSL book sale is 10 to 2 p.m. in the War Memorial Building.

Monday, May 30: The Shepherdstown Library will be closed to observe Memorial Day.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all knitters, quilters, rugmakers and others! We meet in the Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, corner of German and Church Streets, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Work on your own projects while socializing with other crafters. (We also take time out for tea and snacks.)

The Trinity Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for some cool finds – clothing for all, jewelry, books, movies, toys, kitchen and other house wares, prints, knick knacks, and holiday items!

The Shop accept accepts donations of clothing, books, jewelry, and many other items. It also collects used eye glasses on behalf of the Lion’s Club.

The Thrift Shop cannot accept furniture, other large items and electronics due to limited space. Contributions may be delivered to the screened-in back porch at any time. Tax receipts are available during business hours. If anyone has questions about the Thrift Shop, please call (304) 876-6990.

Today

The Budweiser Clydesdales will visit downtown Shephrdstown thanks to Jefferson Distributing. The team will arrive at 5 p.m. on N. King St. in front of Town Hall. After getting parked, the public can watch as the crew dress and hook the horses. The horses will be paraded down German St. approx. 6 to 6:15 p.m. They will then be avaiable to be seen across from Town Hall until 7:30 p.m., where the public can watch them be undressed and put back on the trucks.

May 21-22

The Shepherdstown Community Club will sponsor its 19th Back Alley Garden Tour & Tea featuring a self-guided walking tour of some 20 private gardens that are rarely open to the public and an elegant afternoon tea.

Tickets can be purchased in advance or in person during the event. Ticket prices are $20 for the Garden Tour and Tea ordered before midnight May 18; $25 after that including the days of the event.

The Peter Burr Bread Bakers’ Guild is offering a spring class on making natural yeasted artisan breads and baking in a wood fired bread oven. The class will include a two-hour evening session on Friday, May 20, followed by a four-hour morning session on Saturday, May 21. For more information on volunteering or purchasing bread, contact Wayne at wbraun@frontiernet.net. All proceeds go to Jefferson County Historic Landmarks Commission (JCHLC). A donation of $40 to JCHLC covers costs and aids in future improvements at Peter Burr Farm. All ingredients are included.

The Jefferson County Museum invites the public to attend a free talk and slide show of vintage photographs by the museum’s historian Doug Perks at 2 p.m. This is the second in a series of photography presentations at the Jefferson County Museum. For his slide show and talk, Changing Faces Mr. Jefferson’s County, Doug will feature historic and recent photos from the museum’s collection to illustrate changes in Jefferson County towns, buildings, and landscapes over the past 150 years. Light refreshments will be served.

May 27-29

FOSL’S annual Book Sale Fundraiser will be held over Memorial Day Weekend, at the Shepherdstown Community Club’s War Memorial Building. A pre-sale Wine & Cheese Reception will be held on Friday evening (cost is $10). This reception is for book dealers and anyone else who wants first choice of all the books. Come to either the Wine and Cheese reception Friday May 27, 6-8 p.m. (cost $10); the Book Sale on Saturday May 28, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; or Sunday May 29, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Special reduced prices on all remaining books will be in effect after 12 p.m. on Sunday. Note that for the first time buyers will be able to purchase books with a credit card this year.

May 30

The George Tyler Moore Center for the Study of the Civil War, 136 W. German St., will hold a special event, “West Virginians at War.” At 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. living historians, representing soldiers from across three centuries, will hold firing and cooking demonstrations. At noon we will have a wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the solemn day. In the afternoon we will host a special event/guided walking tour of Locust Spring Hospital, Keedysville, Maryland, which was used as a field hospital after the Battle of Antietam, from 2.30-4.30 p.m. Audiences should feel free to visit the George Tyler Moore Center throughout Memorial Day but reservations and further instructions are required for the Locust Spring Hospital tour. At 2 p.m., the Pack Horse Ford Chapter will hold a ceremony, the first of its kind in Shepherdstown. A bronze DAR marker on the War Memorial Building will be unveiled, dedicated to the many Patriots from Shepherdstown and vicinity who sacrificed their lives in the struggle for American independence. This Memorial Day celebration is sure to please young and old alike. The Jefferson High School JROTC will bring out the Color Guard, flags waving in the air. The Henrietta Bedinger Lee Society, National Society Children of the American Revolution will help with the dedication.

June 18

The Eastern Panhandle Conservation District (EPCD) will host its annual “District Dash” which is a 5K and 1 mile fun walk at Cacapon State Park’s Nature Center. This event not only showcases the work of EPCD, but it is also a fundraising event. Proceeds from the day go towards our conservation funds. A large part of our work is going into the local classrooms and community organizations to teach others on the importance of conservation and environmental education. We also provide cost share assistance programs for local farmers and we also provide various septic pumping and upgrades payments to homeowners, dependent upon their location. EPCD covers Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties of West Virginia.
