Reading logs are available in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department for kids and teens interested in earning prizes by reading (or being read to) during the Library’s Summer Reading Program. Additional prizes may be earned by showing us your updated reading logs every week. Monday, June 20: The Shepherdstown Library will be open from 10 to 7 on West Virginia Day.

The Library’s weekly story times for children have ended, and will resume in September. Instead there are free summer events funded by the Friends of Shepherdstown Library (FOSL): no registration is required, and the doors open 30 minutes prior to each show. Wednesday, June 22: Music with children’s performer Tony M. at 11 a.m. for all ages (infants and older) at the Community Club’s War Memorial Building (102 E. German St.)

Friday, June 24: The FOSL Book Club will discuss The Fateful Lightning: a Novel of the Civil War by Jeff Shaara at 4 p.m. in the Shepherdstown Library.

Saturday, June 25: Ages three and older are invited to a special “summer fun” Saturday story time (with songs and an activity) in the Library’s Children’s Department.

Tuesday, June 28: “What’s the Matter” (on matter’s physical and chemical changes) will be presented at 11 a.m. by the Maryland Science Center for ages five and older, also in the War Memorial Building.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all knitters, quilters, rugmakers and others! We meet in the Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, corner of German and Church streets, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Work on your own projects while socializing with other crafters. (We also take time out for tea and snacks.)

The Trinity Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for some cool finds – clothing for all, jewelry, books, movies, toys, kitchen and other house wares, prints, knick knacks, and holiday items! The Shop accept accepts donations of clothing, books, jewelry, and many other items. It also collects used eye glasses on behalf of the Lion’s Club. The Thrift Shop cannot accept furniture, other large items and electronics due to limited space. Contributions may be delivered to the screened-in back porch at any time. Celebrate West Virginia Day by running the ‘District Dash’ 5K and 1 Mile Rund Walk to be held at Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs. Proceeds will beenfit residents in the Eastern Panhandle in furthering and promoting conservation education programs and events. Cost is $25 for runners and $10 for walkers. To register online visit www.active.com and search “District Dash.” The Eastern Panhandle Conservation District (EPCD) will host its annual “District Dash” which is a 5K and 1 mile fun walk at Cacapon State Park’s Nature Center. This event not only showcases the work of EPCD, but it is also a fundraising event. Proceeds from the day go towards our conservation funds. A large part of our work is going into the local classrooms and community organizations to teach others on the importance of conservation and environmental education. We also provide cost share assistance programs for local farmers and we also provide various septic pumping and upgrades payments to homeowners, dependent upon their location. EPCD covers Berkeley, Jefferson and Morgan counties.

GEG Meeting. Sustainable Gardening: What is Ecological Gardening? with Joann Harstad, Berkeley-Jefferson WVU Extension Master Gardeners Joann defines sustainable gardening, organic, and permaculture, and offers suggestions for the home gardener to move forward in this important direction. Take care of the earth and the earth will take care of you. Breakfast at 9 a.m. Please bring a breakfast dish if you can, a chair to sit on, your extra plants, and your enthusiasm. Program begins at 9:30 a.m., rain or shine. About the GEG plant exchange: Do you have extra seeds or seedlings of your own? Too many perennials? Bring them to share with GEG members. If possible, please identify them.

Chair Yoga at the Bolivar-Harpers Ferry Library. Join us at 10:30 a.m. for Chair Yoga. This is the first Summer Reading Program event in our Interactive Health and Wellness Series. . Please dress in loose fitting clothes and prepare to breath. This is a free program offered to the community. Sign up will begin June 6, 2016.

July 2

Jefferson County Parks and Recreation will host the annual Independence Day celebration at Sam Michael’s Park. Gates open at 5 p.m. for all to come enjoy vendors, games and food vendors as well. Fireworks display will take place at dusk. There is no cost for admission and parking is free. Minimal cost for some activities. Bring a picnic and the whole family!

July 16

Come join us for our 6th annual rubber ducky race, featuring real rubber ducks racing down the “town run” of Shepherdstown. The race starts at 4:30 PM, but we will be out on German Street in front of McMurran Hall all day, for the day of the event selling tickets. We will also have access to the small house on Princess Street for your children to visit, grab bags, and face painting.
