The Shepherdstown Library has extended weekend hours: on Fridays it is open from 10 to 5, and Saturdays from 10 to 3. Mondays through Thursdays: 10 to 7.

The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all knitters, quilters, rugmakers and others! We meet in the Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, corner of German and Church streets, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Work on your own projects while socializing with other crafters. (We also take time out for tea and snacks.)

The Trinity Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for some cool finds – clothing for all, jewelry, books, movies, toys, kitchen and other house wares, prints, knick knacks, and holiday items! The Shop accept accepts donations of clothing, books, jewelry, and many other items. It also collects used eye glasses on behalf of the Lion’s Club. The Thrift Shop cannot accept furniture, other large items and electronics due to limited space. Contributions may be delivered to the screened-in back porch at any time. The Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk continues throughout the summer and into the fall every Friday and Saturday evening. The 90 minute walk starts at dusk and showcases at least 20 stories and legends of the town, retold by researcher, Dana Mitchell. Cost is $12 per person and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Bridge Gallery is having its Summer Art Bazaar. The Main Gallery area will be full of items donated to raise funds for the Jefferson County Animal Welfare Society. Additional vendors will be participating and donating portions of sales to the cause. Donations can be brought to the Gallery; we are looking for art, ceramics, art materials, art books, jewelry, fun, funky and bazaar things. For additional information, call 304-876-2300.

Aug. 12

Come be a part of the Hymn Sing and Ice Cream Social at Bethesda United Methodist Church at 6:30 p.m. Rev. Arthur Renner, who has organized and led many Hymn Sings during his ministry, will lead this event. The Hymn Sing is part of the Centennial Celebration of the Raising of the Church from a one story building into the present structure which is located at the intersection of Molers Cross Roads on Engle Moler’s Road. Aug. 13

New Street United Methodist Church will be hold its annual Peach Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Homemade peach ice cream, peach pie (by the slice), and other peach desserts will be served. Sandwiches and drinks are also on the menu. Extra whole pies will be sold after 2 p.m. if they are available. Everyone is invited to enjoy this event.

Aug. 14

Area Clergy from Jefferson County will host a community prayer service. This ecumenical prayer service will help promote spiritual healing for students, families, faculty, staff and our entire JHS community; allowing a fresh start as the new school year begins. The service will begin at 6 p.m. in the Jefferson High School Auditorium, 4141 Flowing Springs Rd, Shenandoah Junction. This 45-minute service will consist of prayers, scripture, music, silence and candle lighting. There will also be an opportunity for individual healing prayers following the service.

Aug. 19

Artist and Photographer Gary Bergel will present a gallery talk, “Eye of the Photographer,” at a reception for the Boys and Girls Club Photography Exhibit at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg. The reception is 4-6 p.m. and at 5 p.m., Gary will discuss images in the Boys and Girls Club exhibit as well as his own work, “Square Seasons” on display in the Back Space gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Sept. 24

To commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Shepherdstown, the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association Inc. will hold a tour of the site of the 1862 battle at 2:30 p.m., led by a Civil War historian. The tour will take about 2 1/2 hours and will include wading the Potomac River at Boteler’s Ford (optional), a hike of about 1 mile through the historic Cement Mill property, and a hike of about 1 mile through the battlefield. Following the tour will be a BBQ serving hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, beer, wine and soft drinks. A donation of $30 is requested. Sept. 5

The Shepherdstown Community Club’s annual Labor Day picnic from 2 to 5 p.m. at Morgan’s Grove Park, featuring what has become a Labor Day tradition for the SCC picnic: The Rohrersville Cornet Band. Founded in 1837, the Rohrersville Cornet Band (www.rohrersvilleband.com) claims to be the oldest continuous brass band in the state of Maryland. Those who have heard them at the SCC’s previous Labor Day picnics know what joy they bring to the day, and if you have not heard them before it is an event not to be missed. We look forward to seeing you at the picnic. Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages sold by the SCC. Please bring a dish to share, especially desserts and salads.
