The Shepherdstown Library has extended weekend hours: on Fridays it is open from 10 to 5, and Saturdays from 10 to 3. Mondays through Thursdays: 10 to 7.

Friday, Sept. 2: The Shepherdstown Film Society will have its opening reception at the War Memorial Building at 5:30 p.m. followed by a free showing of “Monsieur Lazhar” at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Hall.

Monday, Sept. 5: The Shepherdstown Library will be closed to observe Labor Day.

Sept. 6 and 7: The Library’s popular children’s programs will resume in September and continue through Dec. 7; no registration is required. “Lapbabies” for children birth through 18 months will be on Tuesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m. beginning Sept. 6. “Time for Twos” will meet from 11:15 to noon on Tuesdays starting Sept. 6. The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all knitters, quilters, rugmakers and others! We meet in the Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, corner of German and Church streets, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Work on your own projects while socializing with other crafters. (We also take time out for tea and snacks.)

The Trinity Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for some cool finds – clothing for all, jewelry, books, movies, toys, kitchen and other house wares, prints, knick knacks, and holiday items! The Shop accept accepts donations of clothing, books, jewelry, and many other items. It also collects used eye glasses on behalf of the Lion’s Club. The Thrift Shop cannot accept furniture, other large items and electronics due to limited space. Contributions may be delivered to the screened-in back porch at any time. The Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk continues throughout the summer and into the fall every Friday and Saturday evening. The 90 minute walk starts at dusk and showcases at least 20 stories and legends of the town, retold by researcher, Dana Mitchell. Cost is $12 per person and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Aug. 19

Artist and Photographer Gary Bergel will present a gallery talk, “Eye of the Photographer,” at a reception for the Boys and Girls Club Photography Exhibit at the Berkeley Art Works, 116 North Queen Street in Martinsburg. The reception is 4-6 p.m. and at 5 p.m., Gary will discuss images in the Boys and Girls Club exhibit as well as his own work, “Square Seasons” on display in the Back Space gallery. The event is free and open to the public.

Aug. 30

Closing reception for Christian Benefiel’s art installation “Swell” will be held at the Phaze 2 Gallery at 5 p.m. Come meet the artist and see this powerful exhibit before it’s gone.

Sept. 5

The Shepherdstown Community Club’s annual Labor Day picnic from 2 to 5 p.m. at Morgan’s Grove Park, featuring what has become a Labor Day tradition for the SCC picnic: The Rohrersville Cornet Band. Founded in 1837, the Rohrersville Cornet Band (www.rohrersvilleband.com) claims to be the oldest continuous brass band in the state of Maryland. Hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages sold by the SCC. Please bring a dish to share, especially desserts and salads.

Sept. 8

Join Local Author Susan Benjamin as she reads from her new book, “Sweet as Sin” at the Bolivar Harpers Ferry Public Library at 6 p.m. Book Club discussion to follow. There’s more to candy than its sugary taste. As this book shows, candy has a remarkable history, most of it sweet, some of it bitter. The author, a food historian and candy expert, tells the whole story-from the harvesting of the marshmallow plant in ancient Egypt to the mass-produced candy innovations of the twentieth century.

Sept. 17

The Martinsburg High School Band is hosting the 38th annual Band Spectacular at 5 p.m. at Cobourn Field, 701 S. Queen St. The annual event is adjudicated by Tournament of Bands judges. More than 10 bands from West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania will participate. Concessions will be sold and vendors will be on hand. Sept. 24

To commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Shepherdstown, the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association Inc. will hold a tour of the site of the 1862 battle at 2:30 p.m., led by a Civil War historian. The tour will take about 2 1/2 hours and will include wading the Potomac River at Boteler’s Ford (optional), a hike of about 1 mile through the historic Cement Mill property, and a hike of about 1 mile through the battlefield. Following the tour will be a BBQ serving hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, beer, wine and soft drinks. A donation of $30 is requested.
