The Shepherdstown Library has extended weekend hours: on Fridays it is open from 10 to 5, and Saturdays from 10 to 3. Mondays through Thursdays: 10 to 7.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and we will give you a free “Bookin’ It for the Library” t-shirt if you sign up for a free Shepherdstown Library card! Children need to be five or older, and adults need to live in Jefferson, Berkeley, or Morgan County and show proof of residence. Saturday, Sept. 17: Children of all ages (infants and older) are invited to a “Going on a Picnic” story time with songs, stories, and a craft at 11 a.m. in the Shepherdstown Library’s Children’s Department (100 East German Street). Friday, Sept. 30: “Left of the Bank” is our annual library fundraiser featuring poetry and music o at 202 South Princess Street. Doors open at 7 p.m. to allow time to enjoy wine, beer, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, and the show begins at 7:30. The Shepherdstown Museum, at the corner of German and Princess streets, is open on weekends from April through October, on July 4, and during Christmas in Shepherdstown. Public hours are: Saturdays, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 1-4 p.m. Visits can be arranged at other times by calling 304-876-0910 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Calling all knitters, quilters, rugmakers and others! We meet in the Trinity Episcopal Church Fellowship Hall, corner of German and Church streets, every Tuesday afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. Work on your own projects while socializing with other crafters. (We also take time out for tea and snacks.)

The Trinity Thrift Shop is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Stop by for some cool finds – clothing for all, jewelry, books, movies, toys, kitchen and other house wares, prints, knick knacks, and holiday items! The Shop accept accepts donations of clothing, books, jewelry, and many other items. It also collects used eye glasses on behalf of the Lion’s Club. The Thrift Shop cannot accept furniture, other large items and electronics due to limited space. Contributions may be delivered to the screened-in back porch at any time. The Shepherdstown Mysteries Walk continues throughout the summer and into the fall every Friday and Saturday evening. The 90 minute walk starts at dusk and showcases at least 20 stories and legends of the town, retold by researcher, Dana Mitchell. Cost is $12 per person and comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The Hagerstown Model Railroad Museum will host Trainfest Summer 2016 at the Washington County Ag Center, 7213 Sharpsburg Pike from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults; under 12 free.

Independent Fire Company Auxiliary will host a Quarter Auction beginning at 11 a.m. Doors open at 10 a.m. Admission of $10 gets a participant two paddles. Additional paddles are available for $2 each. Raffles and cash tip jars will be sold. The company is located at 200 W. Second Ave. in Ranson.

Members of the community are invited to join friends and neighbors at 10:30 a.m. for coffee and conversation to learn about the history and benefits of Shepherdstown Area Independent Living (SAIL), a non-profit, member-supported organization. Our mission is to help each other remain active, connected, and independent in our own homes and communities as long as possible. The Martinsburg High School Band is hosting the 38th annual Band Spectacular at 5 p.m. at Cobourn Field, 701 S. Queen St. The annual event is adjudicated by Tournament of Bands judges. More than 10 bands from West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania will participate. Concessions will be sold and vendors will be on hand. Sept. 24

To commemorate the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Shepherdstown, the Shepherdstown Battlefield Preservation Association Inc. will hold a tour of the site of the 1862 battle at 2:30 p.m., led by a Civil War historian. The tour will take about 2 1/2 hours and will include wading the Potomac River at Boteler’s Ford (optional), a hike of about 1 mile through the historic Cement Mill property, and a hike of about 1 mile through the battlefield. Following the tour will be a BBQ serving hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, beer, wine and soft drinks. A donation of $30 is requested. Order Sons of Italy in America will host their 35th annual Columbus Day dinner dance at the Elks Club, 11063 Robinwood Drive, Hagerstown, Maryland from 5 to 11 p.m. Featured guest speaker is Rosemarie Cannarella-Lorenzetti, MD. Cost is $35 per individual and includes dinner buffet, dancing and door prizes. Music by “Giovanni Live.” Tickets must be purchased no later than Sept. 24.
