Fourteen boys and girls from Shepherdstown were named local champions at the 2009 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships and have earned the right to compete at the district level.

Council 13887 in Shepherdstown sponsored the competition at the Shepherdstown Middle School gym. All area youngsters from age 10 to 14 were eligible to participate.

Atley Fortney was the 10-year-old girls champion and Noah French was the winner of the 10-year-old boys division. In the 11-year-old bracket, Aislynn White was the girls champion and Zackary Hostler was the boy’s champion. The 12-year-old winner in the girls division was Alanna Baylor. The 13-year-old boys division was won by Devin Forman, and Nathan Day was the 14-year-old boys champion.

Each contestant was allowed 15 free throw attempts. All of the winners will compete in the district competition to be held in February in Keyser, with an eye toward moving on to the state and international levels.
