Business perks up on German Street

By Staff | May 15, 2009

A flurry of business relocations may have some Shepherdstown shoppers re-orienting themselves in the town’s shopping district. Two new retail stores, Azad’s Oriental Rug Emporium and R Consign and Design, and a new eatery, Alli Kats Moon Dogs have opened shop on German Street.

In addition to the new businesses, the Good Shop has consolidated locations into a single store on German St., and Mellow Moods is moving a few doors up West German Street.

The most prominent new business on German Street is undoubtedly Azad’s Oriental Rug Emporum, on the corner of German and Princess streets at the former location of J. Cooper Gallery. The store is owned by East Coast carpet mogul Reza Azad. Born in the Iranian city of Kashan, a city renowned for the production of unique Persian rugs. He is proud to note that his family has been producing and dealing in oriental rugs for four generations.

This is his third location, with another storefront in Hagerstown in addition to his Northern Virginia home showroom from which he deals in oriental rugs. His business also extends to Iran, where he has a staff that travel around the country purchasing carpets for export to the states. The process is very time consuming, just getting the massive quantities of rugs through customs takes three months.

The carpets range greatly in price depending on the size, age, condition, and city of origin. A 2- by 3-foot carpet can be had for $50 to $75. Full-size carpets range from the $800 to a few thousand dollars, though some of them are priced as high as $28,000.

Moving westward on German Street, shoppers will encounter a new consignment shop, R Consign and Design at 102 E. German St, the former location of the Good Shop. R Consign and Design is owned by Roxana Fugleberg. She’s a physical therapist by day in Northern Virginia, and on the weekends (the store is only open on weekends) she will be running the consignment shop. The store offers a 50/50 split on merchandise, with a two month consignment period. Fugleberg notes that if, at the end of the consignment period, the item is unsold then she will offer to donate the merchandise to the local women’s sheleter.

Shepherdstown got its first true late-night bar hopping food stop when Alli Kats Moon Dogs opened earlier this week. The hot dog stand, located in the space formerly occupied by Mimi’s Ice Cream, will stay open until 2 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday, hoping to snag the dollars of Shepherdstown’s weekend night owls. The shop is located next to Betty’s in the space formerly occupied by Mimi’s Ice Cream.

The Good Shop consolidated their storefronts on German and Princess streets into one storefront at 102 W. German St., above Kazu restaurant. Mellow Moods is also in the process of relocating a few doors up the street from 111 W. German St. to 119 W. German St. The new location opens for business May 20.
