Bakerton fetes 120th

By Staff | Jul 24, 2009

The community of Bakerton in eastern Jefferson County is celebrating its 120th anniversary with a full slate events all day this Saturday, July 25.

A car and motorcycle show and live music are planned along with offerings from local farmers, a petting zoo, a show from Shepherdstown’s JHMS Martial Arts and Navy and Marines demonstrations and field challenges.

Martinsburg’s Mountaineer Brewing Co. will host a beverage garden. Stunt cyclist Gary Harding will perform on Carter Avenue, the town’s main street.

Wanda Mason-Ballenger, owner of the Bakerton Market, said the last time such a celebration was held was in 1989 when former market owners Dottie and Skeeter Welsh put on a 100th anniversary celebration. She calls the 120th celebration a chance for local residents to “come together, be together and do something together.”

“I think it’s going to be just splendid,” she added.
