Why can’t this nation just do what works?

By Staff | Jul 31, 2009

As a child I read the Sunday Comics. On the first page in the upper corner was written “What fools these mortals be.” There was a picture of a cherub named Puck holding a banner.

As I approach my 87th birthday, I see how true he was. Over the years, I’ve seen stupid things that have happened, many things we can’t use. A few examples …

The best fly catcher is sticky tape that is hung from the ceiling. We can’t use them in restaurants because they are unsanitary. Is a fly who walks on a urinal or toilet seat then on your fries more sanitary?

It is estimated we have enough oil in Alaska to last the entire country for 60 or more years. Instead we spend billions in foreign countries that hate our guts. If this isn’t insane enough, I received a letter the other day stating that some members of the State Department are planning to give these mineral and oil rich islands to the Russians.

Many of us remember the story of the $700 toilet seat and the very expensive hammer. Some of these government wastes are beyond comprehension. When the Senate gets a bill consisting of 800 or more pages, they take 10 minutes before they vote!

Social security is having problems. In the late 40s and 50s all the interest was twice used for other programs. This was illegal because it is a trust fund. Then in 1969, the president put Social Security in the general fund. Politicians should be held to the same laws as all American citizens.

The latest deal is Government health insurance. We have seen over the years what the politicians do usually costs four times as much and doesn’t work.

We have the greatest country in the world. Let us hold those responsible to uphold our Constitution. Our founding fathers were willing to give their lives for our freedom.
