Full Circle presents ‘The Turn of the Screw’

By Staff | Oct 16, 2009

Kristina Arntz of Martinsburg and John Van Eck of Germantown will be performing “The Turn of the Screw,” playwright Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of the Henry James ghost story.

Shepherdstown’s Full Circle Theater Company presents playwright Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Henry James ghost story “The Turn of the Screw.”

The play is directed by Tina Bartles. Hatcher’s adaptation closely follows the original tale of a neurotic governess who is at the center of the story. She lets herself get carried away by her two beautiful young charges.

The play is performed with a minimal set which includes a single staircase and a chair.

The sparseness of the set extends to the casting, with Kristina Arntz of Martinsburg as the governess and John Van Eck of Germantown playing everyone else: The narrator, the charismatic master who “seduces” the romantic and inexperienced governess, Mrs. Grose the housekeeper, the angelic but possessed 8-year-old Flora and her 10 year-old brother Miles. The evil takes the form of two ghosts of former servants.

The “Turn of the Screw” will be performed Fridays and Saturdays, Oct. 16, 17, 23, 24 at 8 p.m. Matinees will be on Sundays, Oct 18 and 25 at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $17 for adults and $8 for students with ID’s.

Full Circle has a great line up for this season. The plays include “Holmes and Watson” Dec. 11-20; “The Hunting of the Shark” Feb. 19-28; “The Glass Menagerie” May 28 to June 6; “Tuesday’s with Morrie” in July.

During the Christmas season in conjunction with Christmas in Shepherdstown, there will be a staged reading of “A Christmas Carol.” Tickets to this event, which include a reception in the theater lobby, are $20.
