Gov. Joe Manchin has lent his support for a plan to construct a 500-car parking garage on Shepherd University’s East Campus on the site of Sarah Cree Hall and has pledged to come up with funding for the project.

According to James Pitrolo, Gov. Manchin’s legislative director, state Delegate John Doyle, D-Jefferson, and state Senator Herb Snyder, D-Jefferson, met with the Governor Wednesday to discuss the need for a parking garage at Shepherd University.

Following the meeting, Manchin reportedly called Shepherd University President Suzanne Shipley and Shepherdstown Mayor Jim Auxer where he pledged his support for the project.

In a recent Town Council meeting, Auxer said that a parking garage on the East Campus was “imminent,” but did not elaborate further.

Doyle said it will be at least two years until funding is secured, then a new theater building has to be constructed to replace the Studio Theater in Sarah Cree Hall, which is still used by the Contemporary American Theater Festival.
