Pedestrian struck while crossing W.Va. 480
Shepherd University student Andrew White, 22, was struck by a car while crossing the Rt. 480/N. Duke Street crosswalk near the Shepherd football stadium on the evening of Sunday, December 6. His medical condition stabilized in hospital and he was expected to have been released from the City Hospital of Martinsburg this past Tuesday.
The accident occured around 5:25 p.m., when local emergency crews were dispatched to the scene. The Shepherdstown Fire Dept. administered patient care at the scene and requested a medivac to transport White. Unfortunately, a medivac helicopter would not be able to get to the scene quickly enough. White, at the time in critical condition, was then transported by ambulance to City Hospital of Martinsburg.
Units from the Shepherdstown Fire Department, the Shepherdstown Police Dpartment, the Jefferson County Sherriffs Department, the Shepherd University police and the Harpers Ferry Police Department responded to the scene.
Shepherd University has tried a number of ways to make the Duke St. crosswalks safer, from installing blinking hazard lights to alert motorists to the impending pedestrian crossing to using a crossing guard to control the traffic at the intersection.
Currently the university posts a security and crossing guard at the crosswalk every weekday in the mornings from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and in the evenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
