JHS Junior wins
vocal competition
Jessica Starkey, a Junior at Jefferson High School, submitted an online auditio for Neil Berg’s Singing with the Broadway Stars for the show’s performance at the Weinberg Center for the Arts, Frederick, Md., and was recently chosen as a winner!
The performance was Sunday, Jan. 17, at 3 p.m.
Jessica sang a solo with five Broadway stars in the finale “Seasons of Love” from the Broadway musical “Rent.”
Jessica is a member of the Chamber Choir, Pop Singers and the Women’s Ensemble at Jefferson High School and studies vocal music with Charity Long in Charles Town.
Children’s theater
Full Circle Theater Company contiues its programs for children and youth ages 8 to 18 with a new8-week spring workshop.
Young thespians will get the hands-on experience of mounting a production of “School House Rock LIVE!”
Classes/rehearsals will take place on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (Feb. 15 through April 8) from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. plus3 Saturday classes/rehearsals on Feb. 13, and March 20 and 27, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Performances are Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, April 9 through 18.
Interested students should register early, as space is limited. Applications will be accepted in the order they are received. Participation fee is $125, and includes everything necessary for the workshop and production.

WVU honors
Andrew Cassell received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship from West Virginia University in recognition of the distinctive achievement of earning a perfect 4.0 Grade Point Average for the Fall Term, 2009.
Andrew is a 2009 Graduate of Jefferson High School and is the son of Mike and Suellen Cassell of Charles Town.
Local student makes Shepherd Dean’s List
Leigh Anne Cassell was named to the Dean’s List at Shepherd University for the Fall Term, 2009. Leigh Anne is majoring in English with a minor in art. She is a 2006 Graduate of Jefferson High School and is the daughter of Mike and Suellen Cassell of Charles Town.
WHS drama slated
The Washington High School Theatre Department will present performances of “Almost, Maine” on Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13.
Residents of the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine, find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.
Shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Washington High School auditorium. All tickets are $5.
